Established in 1796, The University of Strathclyde, came into existence thanks to what John Anderson, a Scottish liberal educator and philosopher, left in his will, after his death. John left money for the development of a university as "A Place of Useful Learning", and in 1796, the Anderson's Institution was found, also referred to as the Andersonian or the Andersonian Institution.
Thomas Garnett took over as the first professor of Natural Philosophy.1828. saw the university move to its new building on George Street, and the institute was renamed to: Anderson's University, in 1877, and Anderson's College in 1881.
In 1903, David Barclay, laid the foundation stone or "Memorial Stone" for the development of the Royal College Building. 1956, saw the institute rename to Royal College of Science and Technology, and finally, in 1964, the institute got renamed to University of Strathclyde.
