History
The university began as the Anderson Institution in 1796, thanks to the donation left by John Anderson, the Chair of Oriental Languages at the University of Glasgow, for the creation of an institution of "Useful learning". Thomas Garnett took over as the first Professor of Natural Philosophy, before being succeeded by George Birbeck, who gave free classes to working tradesmen on Mechanics. 1828 saw the university move to its new building on George Street, and rename itself to Anderson's University, before becoming Anderson's College in 1877. In 1956, it renamed as the Royal College of Science and Technology, before finally taking over its present name in 1964.
