History of University of Wisconsin USA System

The University of Wisconsin System was formed in 1971 by merging two public university systems - the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin State University. This merger, a result of Chapter 100, Laws of 1971, aimed to streamline higher education in the state.

The pre-merger University of Wisconsin, established in 1848, had the flagship Madison campus and several other institutions. From 1857, normal schools developed into the Wisconsin State Universities system. In 1971 the two systems were merged under a single Board of Regents. The new system comprised research universities, comprehensive universities, branch campuses, and a statewide extension network.

In a more recent restructuring in 2018, the UW System aligned its 13 two-year colleges with seven of its comprehensive universities. That was done to optimise resource use and improve educational offerings.
