Montclair State University History
The history of MSU can be traced back to the year 1908, when Governor John Franklin took part in the opening ceremony of the New Jersey State Normal School. In 1915, the College's first dormitory, The Russ Hall, opened. Charles S. Chapin took over as the first principal of the institute. In 1928, Chapin Hall opened. 1929 saw William O. Trapp, one of the university's first graduates, win the Pulitzer Prize.
By 1932, the institute finally became authorized to give out its own master's degrees. The institutes' operations halted during the Second World War, but 1947, after the war ended, saw war veterans enroll in huge numbers. In 1949, the New Jersey School of Conservation was set up. The institute continued its expansion over the rest of the 20th century and today enrolls more than 20,000 students from over 75 countries.
