Established in 1946, New York City College of Technology is an open institution that was earlier known as the New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences. It was renamed to its current name in 1953. The institute aims to provide business and technical education. The institute was considered to be the first community college in New York City. The institute began its classes with over 246 students. It gained college status in 1980.
The campus comprises nine buildings and several schools. It features two libraries that hold up thousands of journals, books, magazines and research papers. Students can also access the electronic resources available at the library. The campus provides all the required facilities to the students. The students experience calm learning at the campus. All the competitions, fests, seminars, quizzes and events organized by the college are held within the premises.
Several cafes and restaurants are set close to the campus. Many medical shops, general stores and stationery shops are located nearby the campus. The campus also features two residence halls, namely the Namm Hall and the Atrium Hall. Also, it is home to various health programmes like Radiologic Technology, Nursing, Dental Hygiene, Restorative Dentistry, Medical Imaging and Vision Care Technology.
The institute features three schools, namely the School of Technology & Design, School of Professional Studies and School of Arts & Sciences. The academic structure of the institute has a number of subjects that are categorised into various departments. With a wide range of courses available, the students get the opportunity to choose among the subjects as per their area of interest.
The School of Technology & Design consists of 9 departments, the School of Professional Studies has 13 departments, and about 10 departments are under the School of Arts & Sciences. The students are taught by experienced faculty members. Many industry professionals visit the institute for guest lectures, interactive sessions and practical workshops. This gives students a wide scope to learn about fieldwork. The college is also known to have participated in various sports competitions.
The institute has a list of some notable alumni that includes Hiraoki Aroki (Founder of Benihana chain of restaurants), Zev Brenner (Radio Host and Founder of Talkline Communications), Ray Sharkey (Television Actor), Salvatore Cassano (Fire Commissioner, New York City), Michael Lomonaco (Television Personality and Chef), Samuel E Vazquez (Visual Artist), William Yosses (Author of the book, Desserts for Dummies) and Julian Niccolini (Managing Partner of the Four Seasons Restaurant).
