NYFA was founded by Jerry Sherlock, a film producer, in 1992. Alongside Michael Young, a former Harvard graduate, he helped open the first campus in the Tribeca Film Center. The academy shifted base to the Tammany Hall Building in Union Square in 1994, before relocating to Battery Park in 2014.
