New York Film Academy History

The New York Film Academy was founded by Jerry Sherlock, a film producer by profession, in 1992, with the aim of creating a school that offers a collaborative and creative work environment to aspiring storytellers. Alongside Michael Young, a former Harvard University graduate, the first campus was opened in the Tribeca Film Center. The academy shifted base to the Tammany Hall Building in Union Square in 1994, before relocating to Battery Park in 2014.

NYFA Summer programs started in 1995, with Princeton University, followed by Yale University in 1996, UCLA in 1997, and the Disney MGM Studios in 1998, before further expanding to reach Cambridge University and Harvard.

The New York Film Academy Los Angeles Campus opened in the backlot of Universal Studios in 1999, and by 2001, the institute began offering filmmaking workshops in Asia. In 2019, the New York Film Academy was finally accredited by WASC.
