History
The institute was founded in 1861 as the Oswego Primary Teacher’s Training School by Edward Austin Sheldon. It moved from its location of Oswego to its current lakeside location in 1913. In 1948, it became a charter member of the SUNY system.
To accommodate the needs of part-time adult students, it established an extension site in Syracuse in 2008.
