Founded in 1889, The University of New Mexico was established to become the state university of New Mexico. Its main campus is located in Albuquerque in New Mexico, U.S., and spread over an area of nearly 800 acres. In 2016, the University of New Mexico became the first-ever university in the U.S. to take an initiative to create a Signature School Program along with the CIA or Central Intelligence Agency, thus, allowing students to converse with analysts and know the method of joining the CIA once they pass out. The university’s reputed faculty includes 35 Fulbright scholars, two MacArthur Fellows, and a Nobel Laureate.
The University of New Mexico's NCAA Division I program offers 16 sports and forms special teams for each of the sports. This university has its own teams in sports such as basketball, cross country running, football, skiing, and soccer.
UNM offers more than 215 bachelor and graduate degree programs, including 94 baccalaureates, 71 masters, and 37 doctoral degrees. Hispanic Business Magazine ranked its Anderson School of Management, the School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, and the School of Law, among the top 10 in the country. UNM also includes College of Arts & Sciences, College of Education, College of Fine Arts, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, School of Architecture and Planning, School of Public Administration, and University College. It also offers special programs such as continuing education, online, International, and Latin American Studies. UNM's Tamarind Institute is one of the leading printmaking workshops globally.
UNM has branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia. Further, the architecture of the University of New Mexico has a Pueblo Revival architectural theme. The campus is divided into three portions - central, north and south. The central campus of this university has the main academic university and is situated between Central Avenue on the south, Girard Boulevard on the east, Lomas Boulevard on the north, and University Boulevard on the west. The central campus comprises 4 museums - Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, Geology Museum, Southwestern Biology Museum, and University Art Museum. The North Campus comprises medical and law schools that are situated on the northern sides of the central campus. The south campus of the university has UNM's athletic facilities
The student union building of the university has a food court, movie theatre, event facilities, student government offices and organization offices, and recreational areas. It is known to be a major hub for on-campus students.
