The six-month apprenticeship after finishing studies in New Zealand offers instruction and work experience in your chosen professional field. In a hands-on education approach, all the apprentices work with the training staff or managers. The apprentices are selected by the company each year based on how interested they are in practical training that will prepare them to function normally in a corporate environment or run their own operations.
The goal of an apprenticeship is to increase the number of individuals who have a command over fundamental skills and increase their diversity of such individuals as well. This is done such that they will be prepared to actively participate in commercial projects that aim to improve their and the corporate’s growth as well.

Most apprenticeships are full-time i.e. 40 hours/week and they run continuously for six months. You should have enough money to support yourself, purchase health insurance for the duration of your stay. The following provides an estimate of your living expenses.

Health insurance

The cost of insurance depends on your age and your insurance source. This is required and could cost approximately the following-

For age 24 or under

NZ$300

For ages 25-29

NZ$322

For ages 30 and up

NZ$658

Language requirement

If you have studied at a foreign university, then you will be exempt from providing a language proficiency score. But if are going from India directly, then as a general rule International applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to submit a TOEFL or IELTS score prior to the application deadline to the company. If the applicant is fluent in English, as mentioned before, a telephone interview with the apprenticeship coordinator may be enough to be substituted for the TOEFL/IELTS test.

Affiliation to the University

Most corporates in New Zealand don’t have relations or affiliations with universities. So if you are looking for apprenticeship opportunities after finishing studies in New Zealand, then you need to look for the job on your own. Your university can’t help you look for an apprenticeship or internship. The concept of campus placements doesn’t exist in New Zealand and you need to contact corporates in your own.
