History
Philanthropists founded this university in 1882, converting a house in Liverpool’s Edge Hill district into a women-only teacher training facility, and opening its doors in 1885. In the 1940s, the Edge Hill campus went from teaching to treating during World War II, becoming a military hospital. In 1959, the university welcomed its first intake of male students. In 1989, Edge Hill became an independent Higher Education Corporation. Then, in 1996, the university’s name changed to Edge Hill University College. There was an explosion in the range of courses available with new UG degrees available in subjects like Communication and Media, Computer Science, Sports Science, etc. In 2006, the university became Edge Hill University (current name). In 2010, this university received the ultimate Oscar of the higher education world, with Times Higher Education naming it as the ‘University of the year’.
