History
The university was established in 1969 as Sangamon State University by the Illinois General Assembly. In starting the university was only focused on postgraduate education. The year 1970, which is regarded as SSU's founding year, saw the start of classes. In 1995 Sangamon State University was acquired by the University of Illinois.
