History
Working Men's College of Melbourne was founded before the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology by the Scottish-born grazier and the Hon Politician. RMIT was first founded by a Melbourne Philanthropist named Francis Ormond in 1882. In 1934, it was renamed Melbourne Technical College. Then, in 1960, the College Council adopted a new name, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. RMIT gained university status in 1992, under state legislation, and then adopted the name RMIT University. In 1992, the university was merged with the Philip Institute of Technology and became a public university by the act of the Victorian Government.
