History
The University formally opened its doors to the general public in 1665, as a result of two major developments. The first was the requirement of well-educated priests after the Reformation. The second was the need for well-educated civil servants to be employed as part of various levels of the government. The duchies had to recruit staff from foreign institutes based in locations such as Paris, Bologna & Leiden. After the establishment of the Church Constitution in 1542/1544, the demand for a university in the region grew. This eventually led to the start of the University of Kiel.
