Monash University Accommodation

Monash University’s Clayton campus offers most of the on-campus accommodation facilities for international students. It includes the Clayton Residential Village that has the Traditional Halls of Residence and Shared Flats. These residences have private bedrooms and shared bathrooms as well as kitchens and lounges. The campus also includes the Clayton Urban Community that has self-contained Studio Apartments with all the required facilities such as a private bathroom and kitchenette.

Monash University was founded in the year 1958 as a public research university and is located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The university was named after World War I general Sir John Monash and is the second oldest university in the state.

Early History (1950s -1970s)

Monash University was established by an Act of Parliament in the year 1958 and the original campus of the university was in the suburb of Clayton where it had been granted an area of 100 hectares of open land. The first intake at the university had 357 students on campus on Mar 13, 1961 and the university kept growing rapidly in size as well as student numbers and finally in the early years of establishment, Monash University offered degree courses in Engineering, Medicine, Science, Arts, Economics, Politics, Education and Law.

Between the mid-1960s to early 1970s, Monash University had become the centre of student radicalism in Australia. By the late 1970s and 1980s, the Monash IVF program was started by Carl Wood and Alan Trounson, and it achieved the first pregnancy in the year 1973. The Dawkins Reforms had changed the landscape of higher education during late 1980s. The university had only one campus located in Clayton with around 15,000 students in 1988 and now has 8 campuses which includes 2 global campuses as well.

Late History (1990s -2000s)

The expansion of Monash University had begun in 1990 with a series of mergers between Monash, the Chisholm Institute of Technology, and the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education. By the year 1998, the university had opened its Malaysia campus as the first overseas campus and the first foreign university in Malaysia. As of today, 30% of the students at Monash University are from outside Australia and come from more than 100 countries in the world and speak over 90 different languages. Monash University has become very prominent in the recent years in the field of medical research. Since the year 2011, the university has had a global alliance with the University of Warwick in the UK.
