Eligibility for PR Courses in Australia

International students thinking of staying back in Australia after they complete their higher education must be able to fulfil the following criteria:

  • Applicants studying under the Subclass 500 Visa or the Graduate Temporary Visa (subclass 485) are eligible to apply after they complete their course. (Check: Types of visa subclass in Australia)
  • The minimum duration of a course must not be less than two years in Australia and the course must be registered under CRICOS.
  • The IELTS score for Australian PR is a minimum of 8.0
  • The occupations that the applicant would choose after completing their graduation must be enlisted in the ANZSCO job list.
  • Also the minimum duration of a course under CRICOS should not be less than two years.

The IELTS overall band score of 8.0 is important so that Australian officials can assess that the applicants have a good command of the language and that they wouldn't face any issues pertaining to the English language during their stay in Australia. How to get PR in Australia on a Student Visa?

Students holding a student visa can apply for PR in Australia, in order to get PR in Australia it's not mandatory to have an employer sponsorship and a minimum of 65 points is mandatory for approval. Applicants can apply online for PR in Australia through three options - family stream permanent residence visas, work stream permanent residence visas or business investment permanent residence visas. Since international students studying in Australia have to have a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485), they are allowed to live and work in Australia for 18 months to four years.

However, in order to apply for a PR in Australia, international students must apply for a Skilled Independent Visa while studying and obtain PR before their studies are complete. Students' PR applications will be assessed based on the points system followed for granting an Australian PR. The minimum score to obtain permanent residency in Australia for international students is also 65 points. Applications are accepted online through the Home Affairs website of Australia.
