About Algonquin College
Established in 1967, Algonquin College is a public college of Applied Arts and Technology and was named after the First Nations people who had lived in that area. Algonquin College acceptance rate of 60% makes it a lesser competitve university to get in. AC is celebrating 51 years as a leader of in post-secondary education, has experienced significant growth since it was established and is continuing to grow today as well. Algonquin is the first Canadian college to sign the Talloires Declaration. Algonquin's three campuses in Perth, Pembroke and Ottawa have recently finished extensive projects. Algonquin College History
Initially, Algonquin College was known as the Ontario Institute of Technology, which was established with a focus on career-oriented education. In 1957, the association started its journey with around 120 students. In 1967, the Ontario Vocation Center and the East Ontario Institute of Technology merged together to form the Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology. As per the Perth campus became operational, the college started expanding its courses in fields such as Stenography, Electronics, Welding, Carpentry, and more. By the late 1970s, the Pembroke campus started offering courses such as Forestry, Business, Electronics, Nursing, Introduction to the Bible, and more. By 1981, the headcount of students enrolled in Algonquin College crossed the 10,000 mark. In the 2010s, two new building were added to the Ottawa campus and they are - The Algonquin Center for Construction Excellence in 2011 and The Robert C. Gillett Student Commons in 2012, along with new campuses in Perth and Pembroke.
