MBA without GMAT: The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score is used by various Graduate Business Schools around the globe to evaluate the candidature of applicants who want to pursue their graduate studies from universities abroad. In this article, we will cover details of an MBA without GMAT in countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, etc.

MBA without GMAT

Most of the overseas education aspirants prefer taking this exam; however, there are some applicants, who face a conflicting situation regarding appearing for the exam. The common questions they raise are:

  1. Is it compulsory to take GMAT for Business and Management programmes?
  2. Is the GMAT Score required in all the B-schools?
  3. Is it true that International B-schools do not offer any GMAT Waiver?

You would be glad to know, that the answer to all these questions is ‘No’. While most of the top B-schools require a GMAT score, many other recognised business institutions consider your profile without a GMAT score for applying to their Business and Management programme. Such universities usually focus on relevant hands-on experience in the field of management or intense scholarly research that has contributed largely to enhancing the potential of candidates. So for many schools, a student's experience in the management domain, college's personal evaluation system, or relevant academic research keeps more weight than mere numbers obtained in a test.

GMAT Waiver at Top Universities Abroad

As we all know the validity of the GMAT Exam Score is 5 years, an MBA aspirant whose score validity has lapsed would need to appear for the exam again. However, several renowned institutions give GMAT Waivers. With a good old score and suitable profile like relevant work experience, these institutions may also offer you a GMAT Waiver.

MBA without GMAT FAQs

Q. I plan on taking GMAT to be on the safer side. How much time is required for GMAT preparation?

A. Time required for GMAT preparation depends on your current level of preparation. Even if you are a beginner who has basic knowledge of Math and English, it should not take more than 6 months for you to prepare for GMAT. Just make sure that you familiarize yourself with the exam pattern and questions previously asked on the GMAT. Do not forget to solve the GMAT OG (Official Guide) and do not ignore mock tests.

Q. How should I begin my GMAT preparation?

A. Those who want to appear for the GMAT must begin my going through the syllabus and questions that have been previously asked on the GMAT. For this, GMAT OG (Official Guide) is of prime importance. You must start with the Official Guide and simultaneously you must study Manhattan GMAT Guides. These two sources should form the base of your preparation. You should aim for a full-length mock test every week. Do not downplay mock tests because they give you an excellent opportunity to review your performance. Once you have completed these sources, you can move on to advanced books and study material.

Q. How much does profile count if I am not providing a GMAT score?

A. Whether you provide your GMAT score to a B-school or not, your profile will always make a major part of your selection process. You must be very careful while drafting your SoP, Resume, Admission Essays, Scholarship Essays, etc. In addition, you need to prepare for interviews as well. GMAT score is definitely important, however, it forms a part of your entire application, it is not an application in itself. Hence, students must focus on building their profile as well.

Q. Is it true that B-Schools that do not require GMAT are low in ranking?

A. This is a false belief that B-schools who admit students without GMAT are low on quality and ranking. Some of the top MBA colleges that offer placements in big firms also have a facility of GMAT waiver. GMAT score does not decide your success in MBA classroom or in the corporate world. B-school selection committees are experienced enough to identify the perfect-fit for their MBA course. As a student, your focus must be on clearing the selection process.

Q. What all factors should I keep in mind while applying to a B-school?

A. Students need to understand that there are multiple factors that decide your selection in a B-school. Even if you score 750+ on the GMAT, it still does not guarantee you a seat in a management course. You need to work on your holistic profile, which includes your academic background, your community involvement, your extracurricular activities, your expression in SoP, your intended career path, etc.
