GMAT 2023 Cut Off FAQs

Q. What is the cut off mark for GMAT?

A. GMAT Cut Off is the minimum GMAT score required to get into your desired business school. The GMAT Cut Off is decided by the universities themselves. A GMAT score of 700 or above will be accepted by a majority of business schools. Majorly, it is the top B-schools that require a score of more than 700. Students must understand that a GMAT score is only a part of their application and is not the only criteria. In order to get selected in top MBA colleges, student must focus on building a holistic profile which has a fine balance of academics, a good GMAT score, and extracurricular activities.

Q. How important is it to score well on the GMAT exam 2023?

A. Getting a good GMAT score will definitely improve your profile and application when it comes to MBA and MIM admissions. However, students need to realize that a GMAT score is not the only criteria for their selection in a B-school. Application documents such as a statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, admission essays, etc. are equally important and can make or break your chances of getting in a B-school. It will be beneficial for the students to work on their profile in a holistic manner.

Q. What should I do to score well on the GMAT exam 2023 to meet the eligibility criteria for MBA admissions abroad?

A. In order to score well on the GMAT exam and meet the GMAT cut offs for various MBA colleges; you need to prepare for the exam consistently for 3-6 months from authentic GMAT prep resources and appear for GMAT mock tests on a regular basis. You must start with understanding the GMAT pattern and the GMAT syllabus. You can then start your preparation with the official GMAT study material. Make sure to appear for GMAT mock tests. You may also refer to Manhattan Guides, Kaplan study material, etc.

Q. Do I have a chance of getting selected to a top B-school if I score less than 700 on the GMAT exam?

A. Even if you score less than 700 in the GMAT exam, you can still get selected in the top B-schools. When you visit the class profile page of a top B-school, you can find that there is a GMAT score range that shows the minimum and the maximum GMAT scores of an MBA batch. Even for top universities like Harvard, the GMAT score range is 540-790. Hence, not everyone in the batch must have scored above 700. If you score less than 700 on the GMAT, you must work hard on your application documents (statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, admission essays, etc.).

Q. Does a 700+ GMAT score guarantee an MBA seat in a top B-school?

A. Neither does a score less than 700 rule-out your selection in a top B-school, nor does a score of more than 700 guarantee your selection in a top B-school. The GMAT exam is one of the factors and not the only factor that decides your selection in a top B-school. Scoring well on the GMAT is important, but you need to work on your overall profile and admission documents as well. B-schools usually look for a complete profile with work experience, community involvement, extracurricular activities, etc. Moreover, your application documents play an equally important role in your MBA or MIM admissions.

Q. Will retaking the GMAT exam affect my chances of getting selected in a good MBA college?

A. Retaking the GMAT exam does not usually affect your MBA admissions. Most B-schools consider your latest GMAT score or your highest GMAT score. For instance, Ivey Business School (Western University Canada) mentions on its website that they consider the highest GMAT score if a candidate has written the GMAT exam multiple times. Students, who score 700, also retake the GMAT exam to improve their scores. Hence, retaking the GMAT exam is not a big issue. The more important point is that you must plan your MBA or MIM admissions carefully so that you have buffer time to retake the GMAT exam.

Q. Should I prefer GMAT or GRE for MBA admissions?

A. Both the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) are accepted for MBA admissions. While the GRE exam may be used for a range of graduate programmes, including MBA programmes, the GMAT exam is a test that caters to the admission process for applicants to business schools for MBA and MIM programmes. Both the GMAT and GRE may be preferred by MBA programmes, or they may demand one test over the other. To choose which test to take, it is crucial to research the precise requirements of the colleges and universities you are interested in.

Q. How good is a 700 GMAT score?

A. With a score of 700 on the GMAT, you will be in the 88th percentile. Usually, candidates get a score even less than a 'good GMAT score'. With a 700 GMAT score, you will qualify for most of the top business schools. However, scoring 700 or more on the GMAT does not guarantee a selection the top B-schools. Students must understand that a GMAT score is only one of the MBA or MIM admission requirements. You need to provide various other admission documents such as letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, admission essays, etc. It is important to pay attention to admission documents as well.

Q. Is 640 a good GMAT score?

A. As per the GMAC, a score of 640 is a good GMAT score, it is around the 68th percentile. Whereas, a score above 700 is an excellent score. Although with a 640 score also you have outscored the majority of the test-takers. However, if you score below 650, you must take your documentation very seriously. Your application documents (statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, admission essays, etc.) should be able to make up for your GMAT score. Students with a low GMAT score can get an admit from top B-schools if their other application documents are strong.

Q. Is GMAT a tough exam?

A. GMAT is taken by more lakhs of students annually and only 5-6% of those are able to score 720 or above. Therefore, we can say that GMAT is a tough exam and it takes a lot of effort and preparation to score 700+ and get into your desired B-school. When we compare the GMAT exam with the GRE exam, we can find that: GMAT includes an Integrated Reasoning section, which is not there in the GRE. In addition, the Quantitative Reasoning questions in the GMAT are more complex than the GRE. So, one can say that GMAT is slightly more challenging than the GRE. However, it is advised that the students familiarize themselves with both the exams before taking a final decision.

Q. Is Math in GMAT hard?

A. Math in GMAT is hard and many test-takers find Quant difficult than other sections. Although, the main Math concepts in GMAT like Algebra, Geometry, and Arithmetic are relatively simple. Also, many students are not familiar with these concepts as they have not studied them since high school. So, for your GMAT Prep start with the basic concepts in these areas. Here are a few tips for GMAT math:

  • Prepare a list of math formulae for revision.
  • Do not skip the GMAT OG at any cost. You must study the official study material at least twice before your exam.
  • Visit CAT and Banking websites to understand the tricks for increasing your speed.

Q. What is the GMAT cut off for India B-Schools?

A. GMAT cut off for Indian colleges varies based on the college admission criteria. Top B-Schools have a higher GMAT 2023 cut off. GMAT cut off for IIM Ahmedabad is 720, GMAT cut off for IIM Bangalore is 720, GMAT cut off for IIM Lucknow is 710, GMAT cut off for IIM Kozhikode is 700, GMAT cut off for IIM Indore is 650, GMAT cut off for Xavier School of Management is 720, GMAT cut off for IMT Ghaziabad is 650, GMAT cut of XIMB is 550, GMAT score range for Great Lakes Institute of Management is 600-760, and so on. It is important for students to understand that their GMAT score is not the only criterion for getting admission to a top B-School in India. Your profile, your performance in the Group Discussion (GD), and your Personal Interview (PI) matter to a great extent. Hence, students must focus on their overall profile and not just the GMAT score.
