Students need to fulfil all the pre-mentioned requirements for getting a student visa to study in Germany. If they fail to meet even a single requirement, chances are that their German student visa issuance may get delayed. To get a German student visa, Indian students require a university admission letter, a mandatory Academic Evaluation Centre (APS) certificate, and proof of sufficient funds (€11,904).

Germany Student Visa: Basic Eligibility

The first and basic Germany student visa requirements for Indian is to know who can apply for the visa. So, any Indian student who has received an admission letter from a recognised German university can apply for this visa. You also need to show that you have enough money/funds to support yourself during your studies in Germany. Although the cost of studying in Germany is low, with no tuition fees in public universities.

The visa you apply for is a national visa (Type D), which is valid for entry into Germany. Once you arrive, you will need to apply for a residence permit at the local Aliens Authority (Ausländerbehörde). This is standard procedure for all international students.

List of Documents Required for Getting the German Student Visa

Here is the list of documents required for getting a German student visa. Make sure to prepare two identical sets of applications in A4 size copies and carry the originals on the date of your visa appointment.

• Valid passport: A valid passport is very important, which must be issued within the last 10 years and have at least 2 empty pages.
• Application Form and Declarations: You need to submit 2 duly signed copies of the Application form & declaration (in accordance with Section 54 of the Residence Act). Along with this, 2 copies of the Declaration for Additional contact and legal representation information are required.
• Biometric Photos: Candidates need to provide 3 current, identical biometric passport-size photos.
• APS Certificate: An APS Certificate is always mandatory for Indian students. However, it is not required if you are doing a PhD/Post Doc, have a German/EU public scholarship, or hold a non-Indian school graduation certificate/degree.
• Proof of acceptance by the institution: You need to show the Letter of Admission from a German university, a preparatory college (Studienkolleg), or registration for a language course. The letter must include confirmation of the language of instruction.
• Proof of funds: It is of paramount importance to know how you are going to fund your education and manage basic living expenses. You can show this through a Sperrkonto (blocked account) in Germany with at least 11,904 EUR for your first year (allowing maximum withdrawal of 992 EUR per month), a formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) by a sponsor living in Germany, or proof of a German/EU scholarship.
• Proof of academic qualifications: These are the basic educational certificates they require:
• Bachelor Studies: Class 10th and 12th Mark Sheets, Diploma Certificate, and University Degrees (if applicable).
• Master Studies: Bachelor’s Degree, other University Degrees if applicable, Diploma Certificate
• PhD / Post Doc: Master’s Degree and other university degrees.
• Language Proficiency Scores: Depending on your medium of instruction, you must provide proof of language proficiency not older than 1 year. For English, exams like IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge Assessment English are accepted. Goethe Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, ÖSD, TestDAF, DSH for German taught courses.
• Proof of Tuition Fee Payment: If your chosen German university charges tuition or study fees, you must provide proof of payment.
• Curriculum Vitae & Motivation Letter: A current CV and a duly signed statement of purpose (SOP) explaining your motivation for the chosen subject, university, and studying in Germany are mandatory.
• Travel Health Insurance: You must have travel health insurance covering at least the first 90 days starting from your intended date of entry into Germany.
• Visa Fee: The required visa application fee must be paid during submission.

Complete Germany Visa Requirements Checklist (2026)

The German Embassy in India has released the list of documents that are mandatory to submit by Indian students with their German student visa application. The documents checklist for Germany student visa application is listed below. Students need to prepare two identical sets of all documents, with copies in A4 size. You must also carry all original documents on the day of your visa appointment.

1. Personal Documents

These are the basic identity and application documents that every student must have ready before submitting their Germany visa application. All documents must be current and valid at the time of submission.

2. APS Certificate

The APS Certificate is an academic evaluation certificate issued by the APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) for Indian students applying to study in Germany. It is mandatory for most Indian students applying for a German student visa.

You do NOT need an APS Certificate if any of the following apply to you:

• You are pursuing a non-German degree while studying in Germany
• You are doing a PhD studies in Germany
• You have received a scholarship or stipend from German or EU public funds
• Your studies are based on a non-Indian school graduation certificate (e.g., International Baccalaureate) or a non-Indian degree (e.g., British Bachelor, Turkish Master)

3. Letter of Admission

You must submit a Letter of Admission from a top German university, or a letter of admission to a Studienkolleg (preparatory college), or registration proof for a language course. The admission letter must clearly mention the language of instruction. If the degree being awarded is a non-German degree, this should also be confirmed in the letter.

4. Proof of Academic Qualifications

These are the list of academic documents which you needs to submit on the basis of the level of degrees. Make sure to get these documents from your college or university, whichever is applicable, beforehand. 

5. Language Proficiency Proof

You need to submit current proof of language proficiency, depending on the language of instruction at your university. This document needs to be issued within 1 year. Older than 1 year of these certificates will not be accepted.

6. Motivation Letter / Statement of Purpose

You must submit a duly signed motivation letter or statement of purpose (SOP). This should explain why you have chosen the specific subject, why you want to study in Germany, and why you selected your particular university. Keep it honest and straightforward - the visa officer reads many of these, so a clear and genuine letter works better than a very polished one.

7. Curriculum Vitae (CV)

A CV is required as part of your Germany student visa application. Your CV should cover your academic background, any work experience, and other relevant achievements. Financial Requirements for Germany Student Visa

One of the most important parts of the Germany visa requirements is showing that you have enough money to support yourself while studying. The German Embassy wants to be sure that you will not face financial difficulties during your stay. There are three accepted ways to prove your finances:

Option 1: Blocked Account (Sperrkonto)

A blocked account in Germany is as important for most of the international students as air is required for breathing. Without a blocked account, you will not be able to apply for a German visa until someone is sponsoring your studies. You need to deposit EUR 11,904 into a blocked account in Germany. You can withdraw a maximum of EUR 992 per month from this account.

Option 2: Verpflichtungserklärung (Formal Obligation Letter)

If you have a sponsor living in Germany, they can submit a Verpflichtungserklärung. This is a formal declaration that they will cover your living expenses during your studies. This is a legally binding document, and the sponsor needs to prove their financial capacity.

Option 3: German or EU Scholarship

If you have received a scholarship or stipend from a German or EU public body, then you do not need to submit the finance certificate. DAAD is one of the best scholarship programs in Germany.

Other Important Germany Visa Requirements

Apart from the main documents and financial proof, there are a few more things you need to arrange before submitting your German student visa application. These are easy to overlook but can cause delays or even rejections if missing.

Travel Health Insurance

You must have travel health insurance that covers the first 90 days from your date of entry into Germany. This is mandatory and must be submitted along with your other visa documents. Once you are in Germany and enrolled at your university, you can switch to the regular German public health insurance (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung).

Tuition Fee Payment Proof

If your German university charges tuition fees, you must submit proof that you have paid them. Most German public universities do not charge tuition fees (except Baden-Württemberg for non-EU students), but if yours does, this document is required.

Visa Fee

You need to pay the German student visa fee at the time of your appointment. The visa fee for a national visa (Type D) is EUR 75. This is non-refundable even if your visa application is rejected.

Prepare two complete, identical sets of all your documents (copies in A4 size). The German Embassy in India specifically asks for this. Submitting incomplete sets is one of the most common reasons for delays.
