  • GRE Verbal Reasoning Score and GRE Quantitative Reasoning Score are reported based on the number of correct responses provided by the test taker. This is the raw score of the candidate that tells the candidate about the total number of questions answered correctly by him. The GRE raw test score would be later converted to a scaled score called Equating.
  • GRE Analytical Writing Score: For the Analytical Writing section, each essay would receive a score from one trained rater and by an e-rater developed by ETS. If both scores are identical in nature, the average of the two scores would be used as the final score. However, if the two scores, one from the trained rater and the other from the ETS developed e-rater are not identical, a third - a human-trained rater would be brought in and the final score would be the average of the two human scores.

How to Calculate GRE Score

In this section, we are going to be discussing the GRE Score Chart of the various GRE Sections of the exam and how to calculate GRE scores. We have already informed our readers that there are three sections in the GRE Exam Pattern, namely: GRE Verbal Reasoning Section, GRE Quantitative Reasoning Section and GRE Analytical Writing Section. Let us now understand how the GRE sections are individually marked.

Raw score GRE conversion chart: In the table below, the Raw Score is the number of GRE questions that the candidate got right during the GRE test. The GRE Raw test score would be later converted to a scaled score via Equating. We have provided candidates with the GRE Verbal Reasoning Scaled score and GRE Quantitative Reasoning Scaled score against the GRE Raw score of the candidate.

GRE Score Range: Analytical Writing Section

As mentioned above, in the GRE Analytical Writing section, each essay would receive a score from one trained rater and by an e-rater developed by ETS. The section is scored on a scale of 0 to 6, in half-point increments. The score table for the GRE Analytical Writing is provided below.

GRE Score Scale: Analytical Writing Section of the GRE Exam

Scores 6 and 5.5

Sustains insightful, in-depth analysis of complex ideas; develops and supports main points with logically compelling reasons and/or highly persuasive examples; is well focused and well organized; skillfully uses sentence variety and precise vocabulary to convey meaning effectively; demonstrates superior facility with sentence structure and language usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.

Scores 5 and 4.5

Provides generally thoughtful analysis of complex ideas; develops and supports main points with logically sound reasons and/or well-chosen examples; is generally focused and well organized; uses sentence variety and vocabulary to convey meaning clearly; demonstrates good control of sentence structure and language usage, but may have minor errors that do not interfere with meaning.

Scores 4 and 3.5

Provides competent analysis of ideas; develops and supports main points with relevant reasons and/or examples; is adequately organized; conveys meaning with reasonable clarity; demonstrates satisfactory control of sentence structure and language usage, but may have some errors that affect clarity.

Scores 3 and 2.5

Displays some competence in analytical writing, although the writing is flawed in at least one of the following ways: limited analysis or development; weak organization; weak control of sentence structure or language usage, with errors that often result in vagueness or lack of clarity.

Scores 2 and 1.5

Displays serious weaknesses in analytical writing. The writing is seriously flawed in at least one of the following ways: serious lack of analysis or development; lack of organization; serious and frequent problems in sentence structure or language usage, with errors that obscure meaning.

Scores 1 and 0.5

Displays fundamental deficiencies in analytical writing. The writing is fundamentally flawed in at least one of the following ways: content that is extremely confusing or mostly irrelevant to the assigned tasks; little or no development; severe and pervasive errors that result in incoherence.

Score Level 0

The examinee's analytical writing skills cannot be evaluated because the responses do not address any part of the assigned tasks, are mere attempts to copy the assignments, are in a foreign language or display only indecipherable text.

Score NS

The examinee produced no text whatsoever.

Q:   When are GRE scores declared?
A:

There is no specific time or date announced for GRE General Test score announcements. According to ETS, students can typically access their scores 8-10 business days after their test date. You will receive an email notification from ETS when your scores are available. ETS does announce specific dates for the release of GRE Subject Test scores.

Q:   How are overall GRE scores calculated?
A:

The total GRE score is the addition of your overall scores from the three sections of the GRE: verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing. Note that, there is no negative marking in GRE, so students can attempt all questions.

For example, if you score 140 on Verbal Reasoning, 145 on Quantitative Reasoning, and 5.5 on Analytical Writing, your total GRE score would be 290.5 (140 + 145 + 5.5).

Q:   How to access GRE scores?
A:

As informed to you earlier, once your GRE test scores are available on your ETS account, the conducting body of GRE - ETS would send you an email notification informing you of the same. You will be required to visit the official website, put in your credentials, and go ahead with viewing your GRE results.

Steps to viewing your GRE Scores:

  • Visit the official GRE website
  • Select Member log-in
  • Enter in your GRE account credentials
