A Student Sponsorship Letter, similar to the Affidavit of Support in the USA, is a formal, written document that proves to universities and immigration officers that a third party - such as a parent, relative, or organisation - will cover your tuition and living expenses abroad. 

Securing admission to a dream university abroad is a huge milestone for Indian students, but having to pay a huge amount of money in tuition and living expenses hits this dream like a truck. The cost of living and studies abroad is too high for Indian students, especially if they're going to study in the Big 5 countries, i.e. the UK, the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand. As much as the academic documents are important, the financial documents are equally important, as they prove you're capable of paying the living and tuition expenses, and the latter may even lead to cancellation of your candidature if you're found with less/incomplete financial means/documents. So, in most cases, students prove their ability to pay the living and tuition costs in their country of education by opening a blocked amount, by holding sufficient balance in their bank account for more than 28 consecutive days, presenting promising bank statements, by getting a GIC (available in some countries) or by getting a sponsor who would be willing to pay for them.

What is a Student Sponsorship Letter?

A Student Sponsorship Letter is a formal document - usually required to be signed and sometimes notarised. It is a written declaration by the sponsor outlining who they are, their relationship to the student and exactly what expenses they will cover (e.g., tuition, living costs). Because immigration officers need verifiable proof of funds, the letter must be backed by some official documents. Hence, a Student Sponsorship Letter is often submitted to the visa authorities with enclosed copies of the sponsor's last three months of salary slips, 3 months of bank statements, a copy of their passport and proof of their investments, if any. Note: If a sponsor mentions in their letter that they will cover the living costs of the student only for the initial two years through a three-year programme, then students will be required to present another means for covering the costs for the third year. In that case, the student must show liquid cash, educational loans or another sponsor to account for the remaining year to prevent visa rejection. Who all can be your sponsor and offer a Student Sponsorship Letter?

Student sponsors and the issuers of a Student Sponsorship Letter (or Affidavit of Support) fall into two main categories:

1. Private/Individual Sponsors who are usually your family and friends
2. Official/Institutional Sponsors, which are usually organisations, governments and universities - that believe in your vision and capability to complete your education abroad fruitfully

The private or individual sponsor category includes your parents, legal guardians, spouse, family friends or close/distant relatives. Both the Student Sponsorship Letter and the Affidavit of Support are documents used to prove an international student has the financial means to cover their education and living expenses. If the student is seeking corporate funding, it is directed to the Sponsorship Coordinator or a specific executive at the organisation.

The Student Sponsorship Letter should include specific details for contact, the student’s academic program and a concrete financial commitment from the sponsor, along with proof of him/her being able to serve his/her commitment. So, the letter must contain the following details:

• Sponsor's Details: Full name, current address, contact information (phone and email), date of birth and passport or ID number.
• Relationship with student: The sponsor’s exact familial or legal relationship to the student (e.g., parent, legal guardian, spouse) must be presented.
• Student's Details: Full name, passport number, and the educational institution and program they are enrolled in.
• Financial Commitment: A clear statement confirming the willingness and ability to provide financial support, ideally specifying the exact minimum amount and concerned duration in the relevant currency.
• Covered Expenses: A breakdown of the costs the sponsor is covering, such as tuition fees, accommodation, food, clothing, and transportation.
• Duration of Sponsorship: The timeframe for which the financial support is provided (e.g., the length of the entire degree program or just initial years).
• Date and Signature: The letter must be dated and feature the sponsor's official signature

What minimum amount of funds must be promised through a Student Sponsorship Letter?

There is no universal minimum amount for a Student Sponsorship Letter. However, the promised funds must fully cover the total outstanding tuition fees and/or the living expenses specified by the destination country or university.
