How to Convert 10 Point CGPA to 4 Point GPA?

If you plan to study in the USA, you must understand the 4.0 grading system. Most US colleges use this scale to check if you are eligible for the top universities in the world. Converting your CGPA to GPA helps you quickly estimate your score. You can shortlist the right universities.

Official agencies like WES do the final evaluation, using a standard formula helps you plan your application early.

CGPA to GPA Conversion Formula & Table

While there is no single universal standard for converting a 10-point CGPA to a 4.0 GPA, most students use the linear conversion method for a quick estimate. This standard formula mathematically scales your Indian academic performance down to the American grading system, helping you gauge your initial eligibility for US universities before submitting official transcripts.

Simple Steps for 10 Point CGPA to 4 Point GPA Conversion

Most universities abroad, especially in the US, require your score as a GPA (usually out of 4.0). While your university may not provide a direct CGPA to GPA Calculator, you can use this easy, standard formula to estimate your score from your 10-point CGPA:

  1. Check your CGPA on your transcript (out of 10).
  2. Divide your CGPA by 10.
  3. Multiply the result by 4.0 (most universities use a 4.0 scale).
  4. Final number is your estimated 4 Point GPA.

Example: If CGPA = 8.0, then (8.0/10) × 4.0 = 3.2 GPA

Why Does My GPA Look Lower Than Expected?

The standard formula (CGPA / 10) * 4 is a conservative estimate.

  • Linear Calculation: An 8.0 CGPA converts to a 3.2 GPA.

  • Holistic Evaluation: Many US universities and agencies like WES may evaluate an 8.0 CGPA as high as a 3.5 GPA depending on your university's tier and your class rank.
