Looking for and applying for suitable student accommodation in the UK should be the second step after receiving an offer letter from the university. It must be performed simultaneously with applying for the student visa in UK. The UK student accommodation landscape is much different from that in India. 

Moving to the UK for studies brings a lot many responsibilities for Indian students. Unlike in India, students have to manage their living, food, groceries, travel, studies and work all by themselves; while such is not the case in India. Similar is the case with arranging student accommodation in the UK. It is more difficult to find student accommodation in the UK than in India; the bills are paid weekly, and it comes with a lot of rules for students to abide by. 

It is important to note that unlike in most other study destinations, the UK Visa and Immigration authorities do not ask for proof of confirmed student accommodation in the UK along with your student visa application. Hence, having sorted a place to live for yourself even before you apply for a UK student visa is not mandatory. But if you have already paid rent or an accommodation deposit directly to your official university sponsor, then your CAS letter can reflect this detail. Hence, this amount (up to a maximum limit) can be deducted from the total funds you need to show in your bank statements as proof of financial means. Different Types of Student Accommodation in the UK

There are various options for accommodation for Indian students in the UK, with the primary one being the university dorms. The university dorms are by far the cheapest student accommodation in the UK. These are equipped with all the facilities that students would need during their stay at the property; many of these specialised university dorms have spacious libraries, gyms and even a small grocery/supplies counter within the premises. 

The other options for student housing in the UK are the purpose-built student accommodations (PBSAs) and private rented/shared apartments. Both of these will be costlier than the university dorms; however, PBSAs will still provide facilities for students’ needs. 1. University accommodations/dormitories in the UK: Also called the halls of residence, these are generally located on or near the campus and are completely managed by the host university you’re attending. Students can expect greater security in these buildings and join vibrant student communities. Entry and exit to these accommodations are generally managed by electronic fobs or keycards to restrict any unauthorised access via keys or other means. The rooms in these university accommodations in the UK are private, but bathrooms and kitchens are often shared (though en-suite options exist), and the rent is usually all-inclusive of utility bills and Wi-Fi. First-year international students can meet fellow students through shared kitchens, common rooms and social events regularly conducted at these student halls.

2. Private Halls (Purpose-Built Student Accommodation - PBSA):- As the name suggests, these buildings are designed to cater to students’ needs. These are modern residential buildings owned and run by private companies rather than the university. Unlike the university dorms - which can only be accessed if you’re enrolled at that particular university- the PBSAs can be accessed by students from any local college or university in the UK. These are great options for students who didn’t get a seat in a university dormitory due to late selection or late application (as limited seats are available). So, students get a similar academic environment in a PBSA at a relatively higher price than a university dorm but cheaper than a private apartment. These also include bills and Wifi included in the rent. 

3. Private Rented/Shared Apartments or Houses: For these, you have to get in touch with local people or private accommodation listing websites. These are private houses or flats rented via private landlords or agents that give students maximum independence in shared community areas. Students pay the rent weekly here and if they prefer to stay alone, this will come out to be really heavy on their pocket. These are the residences that often lead students to take part-time jobs in order to pay for their hefty rent (if not shared), food, bills, groceries, WiFi and other miscellaneous expenses. Unlike the previous two types of student accommodation UK, bills and other amenities are not included in the rent of these properties. 

4. Homestay Options (Less Popular): This is the most different and one-of-a-kind type of housing option in the UK for students. These are rooms rented inside a local family's private home and often include meals and a supportive family environment. These are a great option for students who have moved far away from their homes for the first time and feel homesick. Homestays are great for cultural exchange and enhancing your language skills, and if you’re really good at networking, you may as well find some part-time work opportunities during your studies or a full-time work opportunity after your graduation in the UK. 

Cost of Different Student Accommodations in the UK

Cities with Cheaper Accommodation Costs in the UK

The southern regions of England are the most expensive, while the North of England, Wales and Northern Ireland offer the most budget-friendly living. However, it must be noted that Ireland is going through an all-time-high housing crisis due to a large number of international students moving in; hence, due to demand and unavailability, several options have seen a surge in charges. Make sure you start looking for student accommodation in the UK well in time, irrespective of the location you choose - this will save you from the last-minute surge charges - and you will have to pay them since there won’t be many good options left.

How to Book a Student Accommodation in the UK from India?

Just as there are different kinds of student accommodations in the UK, the booking process is also different. 

1,. Booking University Accommodations in UK 

For university accommodations, you can directly contact your academic advisor, or you can also visit the official housing portal of your university. Note that you can only apply for a university dorm if you have received and accepted an unconditional offer letter. 

After you accept the offer from your university, visit your university's accommodation webpage to review available halls, catered vs. self-catered options and pricing bands. Apply before the university's priority deadline (usually during the summer before a September start) to qualify for first-year accommodation guarantees.

Once the university allocates a room, review the contract terms and pay the requested advance rent or security deposit to secure your booking.

2. Booking PBSAs/Private Accommodations

Booking Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) or private shared housing in the UK from India is an entirely online process that you should start 4 to 6 months before your course begins. Even if you’re targeting university dorms, you should still be searching for suitable private accommodation - just so you’re not left clueless in the end, having no concrete choice and paying higher costs.

Since the whole process is online, move to sites like University Living, Student Roost, Vita Student, Chapter Living, Uni Acco, etc. and choose your options. You must have the following documents ready to be able to book and finalise your accommodation:

1. University’s acceptance letter

2. Passport or UK student visa (or visa application receipt)

3. Proof of funds (bank statements or scholarship letters) to show you can pay rent

4. Guarantor details (if using a private rental, you may need a UK guarantor service or expect a request to pay 3 to 6 months of rent in advance)

You will then be required to choose the specific room you would want for yourself and sign the contract with the property owner. It is highly recommended that students thoroughly check the cancellation policy (look for "No Visa, No Pay" clauses) and contract length (usually 43 to 51 weeks). Remember that your contract won’t be finalised until you pay a deposit amount or advance rent. So, pay a small holding deposit or advance rent online using an international credit/debit card or a cross-border remittance service from India. 

3. Booking Homestays in UK 

You can book a UK homestay from India by contacting your university's housing office or using verified international placement networks like Hosts International or Homestay.com. If you have seniors or family members also located in the UK, you can also get several property owners’ numbers from them, and you can also receive great real-life advice on these accommodations. 

Things to Keep in Mind While Booking a UK Student Accommodation

Students’ security is the greatest concern for accommodations hosting students in the UK. So, if you are under 18 years old, specific independent care and accommodation arrangements must be proven and declared as part of your application guidelines. Below are a few lesser-known facts about student accommodations in the UK.

1. While London features the highest rent, it also offers the highest density of part-time work.

2. Cities like Newcastle, Sheffield and Manchester have very low accommodation rents, allowing you to comfortably cover 100% of your housing costs using the money earned from your allowed 20-hour-per-week term-time jobs. 

3. If you are coming for a 1-year master’s programme in the UK, your course will typically run for a full 12 months (September to September) - with your dissertation due in August or September. However, the standard duration of most university halls and HMO contracts lasts only 40 to 44 weeks - meaning your tenancy will end abruptly in June or July. So, it’s recommended that you always verify the exact end date of your contract. If you are a postgraduate student, strictly look for 51-week contracts or explicitly ask for a postgraduate-specific wing.

4. Many private landlords list properties as "bills included" to attract international students. However, hidden deep inside the tenancy agreement is almost always a "Fair Use Clause" for gas and electricity. Indian students, unaccustomed to the damp UK winter, often run central heating or plug-in electric space heaters continuously. If your household exceeds the landlord's predetermined kilowatt-hour annual cap, the landlord is legally entitled to bill you for the surplus balance at the end of your tenancy. So, always ask for the specific monetary or usage cap limit on utilities before signing an "all-inclusive" private contract.
