Tips to Increase Scholarship Chances in Germany for Indian Students

Germany is widely known among students for its quality and free education & research. In the light of on-going wars across other major countries as well, the country is gaining more attention from students than ever. But, is getting free education in Germnay really that easy? The answer is no. Free education is only offered by the public universities in Germany, while private ones charge a good price. So, you would really need to apply for a scholarship in case you don’t happen to get a seat at its public and free universities. The thing here to note for Indian students is that - the public universities in Germany have a very strict assessment system for students coming in from abroad. So, it’s not easy to get a seat in them. That’s why most Indian students look for scholarships to study in Germany, which also are not easy to get. So, read this article as we’ve listed the top tips to increase your scholarship chances in Germany. But first, understand what is the competition about and what you are standing against.

Understand the Competition First

The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, or German Academic Exchange Service) is Germany's flagship scholarship body and the most popular funding route for Indian students. It offers fully-funded scholarships to students. But, according to research published by MyGermanUniversity, the DAAD scholarship success rate for Indian applicants is around 10% only. In 2024-25, DAAD funded only 287 Indian students across all postgraduate fields - which is not a large number given how many thousand students apply. As per the Expatrio scholarship guide, the acceptance rate of DAAD scholarship ranges from 10% to 15% across all international applicants. Hence, strong GPAs and motivation letters are not just optional - they are the baseline.

Tips on Get a Scholarship in Germany for Indian Students

Now that you have understood the challenges, go through the top tips to get scholarships in Germany.

Tip 1: Start 12 to 18 Months Before Your Target Intake

This is the single piece of advice that separates successful applicants from those who apply with a rushed file and wait another year. Usually what happens when you apply near the application deadline is that - you may receive request to submit a few documentation in support of your previously submitted ones. In that case, arranging the desired documents that will form the basis of your scholarship application’s decision may be a little bit difficult. And this step can be repeated if the scholarship committee doesn’t get the appropriate documents for the overall verification of your qualifications. Hence, applying near the deadline may not allow you to do so again within the deadline if a situation like that arises.

For that reason, the DAAD itself states on its official scholarship applicant page: "It is important that you inform yourself well in advance about the application requirements and deadlines and apply to several universities."

Tip 2: Don’t Depend Only on the DAAD Scholarship | Apply to Multiple Scholarships Simultaneously

Most Indian students come up with DAAD as their only plan. They pick DAAD, apply, wait, get rejected and then start looking at other options. This is the most expensive mistake in terms of time.

Students who submit only one scholarship application and receive a rejection often face an additional year of waiting. Hence, you must submit applications for at least 3- 4 scholarships, even if that list includes a partially-funded one. Hence, you can apply for scholarships in Germany in layers, i.e. applying for different scholarships simultaneously.

Tip 3: Get Your APS Certificate Done Early - It Is Non-Negotiable for Indians

Submitting an APS Certificate is not just important but mandatory for Indian students for both university applications and the student visa. It is an official document that is issued by a joint body of the German Embassy and DAAD and verifies that your educational qualifications are genuine and meet German university standards. Since securing a scholarship in Germany is completely useless if you cannot legally enrol in the university or get a visa, getting an APS Certificate in time becomes important.

Getting an APS Certificate costs INR 18,000 for Indian students and this fee is non-refundable. The usual processing time for getting an APS Certificate ranges from 3-4weeks, which may even stretch to up to 8-10 weeks during peak admission season or due to any discrepancy found in your documents.

Note:- If you passed JEE Main and Advanced, you are exempt from the TestAS requirement for the APS certificate

So, for the APS Certificate, start an application at least 4-5 months before your university application deadline. Because if even one original document is missing or a photo is low resolution, your application is automatically rejected and delayed by weeks.

Tip 4: Draft a Very Strong Motivation Letter

A motivation letter decides the success or failure of your scholarship application. Since the scholarship committees go through lakhs of applications each year, so, merely meeting the borderline eligibility requirements will hardly help you win the scholarship. So, a motivation letter, also called the Statement of Purpose (SOP) comes to the rescue. If your SOP is strong nough, it can compensate even for average scores/grades but a weak SOP can do further damage to your applications even if your grades are good enough. So, you understand now that high grades are important - but just to be eligible for a scholarship, a graeter weight in decision lies on the SOP for scholarship.

Tip 5: Build a Research Profile Before Applying - Not After

If you’re going to apply for a research program or PhD, then teh scholarship committees maybe interested in knowing how good you’re at research. In that case, creating a strong research profile comes handy. To create a strong research profile, Indian students must;

  • Get publications or conference papers, even at student-level. Even a co-authored paper in a national journal or a poster at a regional conference signals genuine research engagement.

  • Get in talks with a German host professor or supervisor who will be ready to supervise your project. If you happen to secure one, your chances at winning a research based scholarship will increase dramatically.

  • Add details specific to your research question, your methodology and why Germany's research environment is necessary to execute the project. This will further strengthen your scholarshi application.

Tip 6: Get Proficiency in German

Most Indian students miss this point and get admitted to the English taught courses like there woud never be the need for them to learn the German language. However, it’s good for all international students to know that even a little proficiency in German even at A2 level will strengthen their scholarship application and improve their visa and post-study work chances.

Tip 7: Target Applied Sciences Universities (HAWs) for Better Cahnces

DAAD’s own official website states that applying to smaller institutes or to the universities of Applied Sciences increases your chances of getting a scholarship. The universities of Applied Sciences in Germany are more practice-oriented, equally respected by employers and significantly less congested with student applications. Indian students systematically over-apply to the famous research universities and ignore the HAWs. But here is the missing point - applying to the HAWs has strong chance of getting accepted. So, the soon you get accepted for college, the sooner you can start your college application.

Tip 8: Letters of Recommendation

Indian students often make the mistake of getting recommendation letters from the most senior professor at their institution - someone who may barely know them - rather than from a supervisor who has directly worked with them. Instead, LOR written directly from your previous faculty who have closely seen you work and study will be more impactful because these letters often contain examples of when you completed a difficult task or why your professor thinks you’re a good match for this seat, along with specific mention of projects, research, or coursework the recommender observed directly.

Tip 9: Match Your Profile to the Right Scholarship's Values

This is probably among the most important tips to be noted for getting a scholarship in Germany. So, you must choose a scholarship that matches your profile, career aspirations, and target course. Etc. Also, the different foundation scholarships in Germany have distinct identity and different parameters for awarding of their esteemed scholarship.
