Good news for all Indian students looking to study in the United Kingdom, with the UK Government bringing back the two-year post-study work visa for international students referred to as the Graduate Immigration Route (GIR) starting in the academic year 2020-2021. The new immigration rules are likely to benefit international students planning to pursue their higher studies in the UK starting from 2020-21. More information on the same is awaited from the UK Government.

The ending of 2019 saw a 93% jump in the number of UK Student Visas being issued by the United Kingdom with over 37,500 Indian students traveling to the UK to pursue their education among the top universities in 2019. While in 2018, 19,479 students were granted a Tier 4 Study Visa, in 2019 the numbers shot up to a whopping 37,450 students receiving a Tier 4 Study Visa to study in the UK. The ripple effect was not only contained in the education sector, as the skill sector also registered a growth of 3% as compared to 2018 with 57,199 Tier 2 Skilled Visas being issued to Indians in 2019.

If we go by the numbers, 2019 has been the year when the largest number of study visas were issued to Indian Students over the span of eight years and this strong upward trend is here to stay. Students have reinstated their faith in the country with the much-awaited rollback of the two-year post-study work visa for international students being a major crowd (read: student) pleaser.

Globally recognized degrees at world-class universities housed in the United Kingdom, the reinstatement of the two-year post-study work visa for international students – GIR announced in October 2019 and the relative inexpensiveness of the cost of studying in the UK have all contributed to a large number of Indian student footfall in the country. The growing cost of education in the home country has also made a fraction of Indian students look at study options offshore. International students also feel that while the curriculum for pursuing masters from a UK university is similar to that of a US university, however, the cost of studying master's in the UK is 30-40 percent lesser in comparison.

The UK has also become a major tourist destination for Indian families, with tourist visas registering an 8 percent increase. The year 2019 saw 515,000 Indian nationals receiving visit visas (tourist visas). Study abroad experts welcome this trend and they strongly believe that the number of Indian students wanting to study in the UK is only to rise further and bring the two countries closure as never before.
