New TOEFL Changes: Starting July 26, 2023, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam conducted by ETS would take less than two hours to complete as compared to the earlier 3-hour format of the exam. The TOEFL exam is one of the most popular English language proficiency tests for candidates who are looking to study abroad.
What is changing in TOEFL iBT?
In this section, we are going to look at the new TOEFL changes that have been brought in by ETS – the conducting body of the TOEFL exam.
New TOEFL iBT Format 2023
Earlier, the TOEFL iBT exam was for a total of 3 hours. However, from July 26, 2023, onwards the revised TOEFL exam pattern will take students less than two hours to complete. The changes have been brought in to provide TOEFL test takers with a better testing experience. The changes in the TOEFL iBT Enhancements Debuting July 2023 include:
- A shorter reading section: Candidates would be required to answer 2 passages in place of 4.
- Streamlined instructions and navigation throughout the test
- Introduction of ‘Writing for an Academic Discussion’ task in place of Independent Writing task, and
- The removal of unscored test questions

Simplified Registration Process
Candidates looking to register for the TOEFL exam will experience a simplified registration process beginning July 2023. Lengthy forms have been done away with, and candidates will only need to create an account on the official ETS – TOEFL Website and register for an available TOEFL iBT test date quicker and easier than ever before. ETS has also introduced localized benefits that include additional payment options for TOEFL exam fees among others and this would be introduced to more countries.
Increased Score Transparency
Candidates who are opting for the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL at Home Edition of the exam can expect their TOEFL scores to be available in their ETS account in 4 – 8 days after their test date. However, Starting July 26, 2023, test takers will see their official score release date upon completion of the test, in addition to receiving real-time notification of changes to their score status. PDF score reports are ready for download within 8 days after your test. TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years.
No other changes have been introduced to the TOEFL Exam.
