The University of Leeds was founded as a public research university in 1874 initially as the Yorkshire College of Sciences. Later in 1884, the college was merged with the Leeds School of Medicine and renamed as the Yorkshire College. The college became a part of the federal Victoria University during 1887 which was joined by Owens College and the University College Liverpool. By the year 1904, the university was granted a royal charter and gained its official university status.
