University of Manchester History
University of Manchester was created through the amalgamation of two universities – Victoria University of Manchester and The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (USMIT). The University of Manchester has its main campus located in the south of Manchester City Center on Oxford Road. The Royal School of Medicine and Surgery as well as the Manchester Mechanics Institute was founded in 1824 Established in 1851, Owens College was founded by the trustees on the corner of Quay Street and Byrom Street which had been the home of the philanthropist Richard Cobden.
Manchester University gained its university status in 1880 and became England's first civic university after which Liverpool and Leeds University became independent. Later in March 2003, the Victoria University of Manchester and the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology agreed to merge into a single institution. After the merging, Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST received 23 Nobel prize winners from their former staff and students Currently, the University of Manchester was launched in October 2004 and then the university was named the Sunday Times University of The Year in 2006. The National Graphene Institute was formed in February 2012 by the EPSRC.
