About the University of Wales

The University of Wales was proudly established by the Royal Charter in 1893. The university is considered to have played a significant role in the development of higher education in Wales, UK. The university was the first and the only university established in Wales and its development was seen as a historic event of political and social development as it was built on the demands of the people of Wales, for the development of its language and culture.

The University of Wales was initially established as a federal university of three constituent colleges namely the Aberystwyth, Bangor and Cardiff; however, over time, all its member colleges gained a full university status and became independent leading the university to become a confederal university. Due to its confederal nature, the University of Wales doesn't have "associated colleges" in the traditional sense anymore. Instead, it works with a range of institutions that offer programs validated by the university. These institutions can vary and may include:

  • Further education colleges
  • Private training providers
  • International institutions

The University of Wales integrated with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in 2017, thus creating a new and better university for students, i.e. the University of Wales. The new university was built upon the heritage and excellence of its two founding institutions with a vision of developing a radical education system in Wales that could address the needs of the students of Wales while also significantly attracting students from other parts of the UK and internationally.

University of Wales Courses

The University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies offers an extraordinary opportunity for postgraduate researchers to dive deep into a world of linguistic and cultural discovery. The university provides research postgraduate degrees, i.e. M.Phil or PhDs in Welsh and Celtic Studies.

To be eligible to take these courses, one must have a first-class or upper-second-class bachelor’s or master's degree in the same or other relevant discipline and can choose to take their degree online. The University of Wales Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies is ideal for pursuing these studies for several reasons:

  • It’s a dedicated research facility, suited for team projects on the history and culture of Wales and other Celtic countries, their languages and literature.
  • Current projects at the facility focus on medieval Welsh literature, Enlightenment and Romanticism in Wales 1750–1900, the history of the Celtic languages and the names of the places in Wales.
  • Students benefit from the university’s own research techniques, media communication and teaching skills, writing and editing skills, and a few additional services provided in collaboration with the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
  • The Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol also contributes to the resources offered to the students pursuing Welsh language studies.

The University of Wales also enables access to higher education by validating courses offered by its partner institutions. These validated courses cover a wide range of subjects and levels, from undergraduate to postgraduate.

Students can opt to study various other courses at the University of Wales’s collaborative centre/colleges (each individually recognised as a separate university now). To get started, students will have to select their course at the University of Wales’s collaborative centre. This centre will provide the students with the student handbook and other resources required to help them with their admission process and also get the student registered with the University of Wales.

University of Wales Admissions 2025

To get started with a research master’s degree or a PhD degree at the University of Wales, you may visit the website, http://postgrad.cawcs.wales/ or contact the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr Elizabeth Edwards, e.edwards@wales.ac.uk, +44 (0)1970 636543.

As the University of Wales also validates courses offered by some other institutions in Wales, the admission process is determined by those institutions, not the University of Wales itself. Generally, you can expect standard requirements like:

  • Academic transcripts (e.g., high school diploma, previous degrees)
  • English language proficiency, if applicable. You will be required to present the scores on IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo tests for the same.
  • Sometimes personal statements (SOP) or interviews
  • LOR

In short, you would apply directly to the institution offering the course you are interested in, not to the University of Wales.

University of Wales Fees for International Students 2025-26

The postgraduate and PhD fees at the University of Wales may be confirmed from the university’s dedicated course website (mentioned above).

For other institutions accredited by the University of Wales, the tuition fees are set by the institution delivering the course, not by the University of Wales. Here are some key points that may affect the tuition fees for international students:

  • Nationality
  • The level of study (undergraduate, postgraduate)
  • The subject area
  • Whether or not you have already been granted a scholarship
