University of Florida History
Initially, the University of Florida was a collection of distinct institutions, later consolidated into one university. East Florida Seminary was the earliest institution established by the Florida Legislature, becoming the first institution of higher learning in the state of Florida. East Florida Seminary was operational in Ocala until the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861. In 1886, East Florida Seminary re-opened in Gainesville, with the inclusion of the Gainesville Academy. Florida Agricultural College was the first land-grant college in the state of Florida.
In 1903, the Florida Legislature changed the name of Florida Agricultural College to the University of Florida.
