Founded in 1952, the University of Hertfordshire is a public university in Hertfordshire, United Kingdom. The university is primarily based on two campuses, College Lane and de Havilland. History
Hertfordshire University was founded in 1952 as a Technical College. The chairman of the de Havilland Aircraft Company, AS Butler donated the land for the University of Hertfordshire. Initially, the university's courses were offered on subjects such as Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering and the Natural Sciences. In 1952, a new Technical College was established in Hatfield and it soon established itself as an innovative force in education. In 1969, Hatfield College of Technology was designated as Hatfield Polytechnic.
In 1989, the Polytechnic was removed from County Council control and given corporate status. In 1992, the British government granted university status to Hatfield Polytechnic and it was renamed the University of Hertfordshire. In 2004, the University of Hertfordshire opened three research institutes; Health and Human Sciences, Sciences and Technology and Social Sciences Arts and Humanities.
