History
UNT was founded in 1890 as Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute by Joshua C. Chilton in the city of Denton. 1894 saw it rename itself to the North Texas Normal College. In 1899, it was recognised as a state college. 1901 again saw it change its name to the North Texas State Normal College. In the year 1961, UNT acquire its present-day name.
