Not every Indian student applying for a Master's in Germany needs to take the dMAT. This article lists all the exemption cases under the APS process, so you can check where you stand.

dMAT Exemptions Guide for Indian students

If you're an Indian student planning a Master's in Germany, you've probably come across the new dMAT (Digital Master Test) requirement by now. The dMAT exam is an academic aptitude test that's being added to the APS documentation process but only for a specific group of master's applicants. Everyone else including - bachelor's and PhD applicants, is not affected at all.

Before you start planning around test dates, registration, or prep, it's worth figuring out whether the dMAT applies to your situation in the first place. A large number of applicants qualify for an exemption based on their program level, their field of study or simply where they are in their APS process. This article breaks down every exemption category as listed by APS India so that you can check where you stand.

Which Group of students is exempt from the dMAT Exam based on their course choice?

From June 29, 2026, the dMAT Exam has been introduced as an additional APS documentation requirement. As its full form, “Digital Master Test”, describes, it’s a test for getting into German universities for specific master’s programs. You may also check the list of documents required for German universities.

Now let’s check who’s exempt from taking the dMAT exam based on the course they’re going to study.

Students Applying for Bachelor’s Programs

Since the dMAT applies only to master's applicants, you are not required to take it if you're applying for a Bachelor's program in Germany.

Not just that, this exemption also extends to bachelor's students who haven't yet completed enough semesters of their program - specifically those who have not completed at least 5 semesters in a 3-year bachelor's program or at least 7 semesters in a 4-year bachelor's program.

Students Applying for PhD Programs

The dMAT requirement does not apply to PhD applicants at all. It is designed specifically for a select group of Master's applicants. Hence, all those students applying for a PhD in Germany are exempt from the dMAT exam requirement.

Students applying for Master’s Programs that are not affected

The dMAT currently applies only to Master's applicants whose previous (bachelor's) degree falls under one of these three fields:

  • Engineering

  • Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics

  • Business/Management

If your bachelor's degree is outside these fields, you are not required to take the dMAT.

If your degree is interdisciplinary or a mixed subject - for example, Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science or Financial Technology - don't assume you're exempt. Your classification will depend on APS India's official affected fields list, which you should check directly before deciding.

Now we’ll see the other cases of exemptions in the coming sections.

Applied for or Received Your APS? Check Whether You Still Need the dMAT Exam

Those who have already completed their APS online registration, shipped their physical documents to Delhi or received their APS certificate before June 29, 2026, are exempt from the dMAT exam. And even if you’re in the process of getting an APS certificate, given that your verification is in process, you’re still exempt.

One important thing to remember here is that - these exemptions are only tied to that specific APS procedure which you’ve started before 29 June 2026. If you open a fresh APS application down the line - whatever rules are in force at that time will apply to you.

Also, note that the requirement of the dMAT exam for APS Germany only comes into picture from Summer 2027 intake onward. So students applying for Fall 2026 intake of master's in Germany do not need to take the dMAT exam.

If you're planning to study in Germany in the Fall 2027 intake, start by checking your eligibility for the dMAT exam and then proceed to registration and preparation.

dMAT Exemptions for Students in Exchange, Double-degree or University Partnership Programs

No matter the course, students on officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university-partnership programs are exempt from the dMAT requirement. These students must prove their engagement in such a program by submitting:

  • Relevant confirmation from their home institution, German partner institution or program coordinator

  • Their group number

  • APS documentation in support of their program

Who is Exempt from dMAT Exam FAQs

Q&A Icon
Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is the dMAT compulsory for all Indian Master's applicants?
A:

No. dMAT is only required by applicants whose bachelor's degree is in Engineering, Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or Business/Management, and whose application is for Summer Semester 2027 or later intakes.

Q:   If I'm exempt from dMAT now, does that exemption carry over to future applications?
A:

No. Exemptions apply only to the specific APS procedure you're currently going through. Any new APS application you start later will follow whatever rules are in effect at that time.

Q:   Is GRE still required after introduction of dMAT for Germany?
A:

Yes, GRE is still required as dMAT has not replaced it. dMAT is an aptitude test required for the APS documentation process, and GRE is a university admissions test. Both these exams differ in their purpose and the courses/documents they're used for.
On a completely different note, you may check with your German university whether they can waive the GRE requirement for your case or not. It's completely the university's call.
