Who Needs to Take the dMAT Exam?
The dMAT is Germany's newest APS requirement, and confusion is running high about who needs to take the dMAT exam. We will cover official eligibility criteria, exempted categories, courses dMAT is applicable, and common misreadings students make. Check if the dMAT exam is applicable for your Master's application in Germany or not.
Recently, APS India rolled out the dMAT exam requirement specifically for Indian students planning to apply for a Master's degree in Germany. The digital Master Test (dMAT) is a new academic aptitude exam that APS India folded into its documentation process from the Summer Semester 2027 intake onward, and it doesn't apply the same way to every applicant.
The confusion is understandable. Eligibility hinges on your exact degree classification, your intended intake, and even the date you started your APS process; details that get lost when advice travels secondhand. A friend telling you "engineering students need it" isn't wrong, but it's incomplete, and incomplete information here can cost you a missed deadline to study in Germany.
This article will work through exactly who the dMAT applies to, who's exempt, and where students most often misjudge their own eligibility, based on the official APS India and g.a.s.t. documentation, so you know where you stand before registering for anything.

What Is the dMAT Exam, Exactly?
Before working out if it applies to you, it helps to know what the dMAT actually is. The digital Master Test (dMAT) is a computer-based aptitude exam administered by g.a.s.t. Gesellschaft für Akademische Studienvorbereitung und Testentwicklung (Society for Test Development and Study Preparation). This is the same organisation which was also behind TestDaF and TestAS.
dMAT exam tests reasoning and analytical ability rather than subject knowledge. The exam is split across a Core Module and a Subject Module, run over roughly three hours with a break in between. Crucially, the dMAT does not replace APS document verification; it's an additional element added to your APS file for select applicant groups.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT to Study in Germany?
Per APS India's official guidance, the requirement is activated only when all three of the conditions below are true together for Indian students only:
- Your previous/bachelor's degree from India falls under the fields of:
- Engineering
- Commerce/Accounting/Finance/Economics, or
- Business/Management
- You're applying for a Master's program and not a Bachelor's or PhD.
- Your planned intake is Germany's Summer Semester 2027 or later.
Which Degrees Fall Under the Affected Fields?
APS India's official affected-fields list runs to well over 150 individual degree branches. Here are some of the most common ones students search for. Classification always comes down to the exact wording on your degree certificate, not the list below.
| Engineering Fields | Commerce / Finance / Economics Fields | Business / Management Fields |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical Engineering | B.Com / B.Com (Hons) | BBA / Business Administration |
| Civil Engineering | B.Com Accounting & Finance | Business Management |

How to Identify Affected Courses for dMAT Exam: Expert Tips
Our Shiksha expert, Chandra Prakash Jha, has something to share on how you can identify previous courses before registering for dMAT. Why his suggestions are crucial - he holds 9+ years of counselling experience for Germany and has helped millions of students get admission:
This is where most students get confused. A "technology-sounding" degree title doesn't automatically count as Engineering. APS India classifies based on your official degree title, branch, and transcript, not on how modern the course name sounds. Standalone Computer Science, BCA, standalone Information Technology, Data Science, AI/ML, and Cyber Security degrees aren't automatically covered unless officially classified as Engineering. The same logic applies to Architecture, Pharmacy, and sector-specific "Management" degrees like Hotel or Aviation Management, the word "Management" alone doesn't guarantee inclusion. So check carefully before registering for dMAT.

Who All are Exempted from Taking the dMAT Exam?
According to APS India, Indian applicants are exempted from the dMAT in some cases. If they completed their APS online registration or shipped documents before 29 June 2026. Or if they have already received their APS certificate. Also, those applying for a Bachelor's or PhD program / are exchange program students are also exempted. The exemption also applies if your previous degree falls outside the three listed fields. Plus, if you're applying for Winter intake in Germany 2026-27, then you are also exempted.
What Should You Do If the dMAT Applies to You?
If your profile matches all three eligibility conditions, treat this as a sequencing issue, not just a scheduling one - you register with g.a.s.t. before submitting APS documents, since the certificate must accompany your APS certificate file. Two things worth prioritising:
- Check your anabin status first. A strong dMAT score cannot compensate for an unrecognised degree or institution.
- Don't wait on borderline classification; if your degree is interdisciplinary (Business Analytics, Data Science, Industrial Engineering), confirm with APS India directly rather than assuming.
Planning the applications along with the dMAT exam is essential here. Ensure everything goes in the set timeline.
