Griffith University History
Griffith University officially opened its doors in 1975, however, its plan of establishment had come into motion in 1971, when the Queensland government decided to create a university as part of a larger plan of expansion of higher education in the region. The university was designed to be different from other institutes in the region, with an emphasis on innovative teaching and addressing the social and environemental issues back then.
Sir Theodor Bray, took over as the first chancellor of the University in 1975, with the first graduation ceremony taking place three years later, for Arts and Science students in 1978.
in 1982, the Griffith campus played host as the Athletes' Village, as part of the 1982 Commonwealth games.
The following years saw the institute expand with the launch of the School of Dentistry in 2003, Griffith Film School and Griffith Sports College in 2004 and the Griffith Health Center in 2013.
Today, the institute hosts more than 44,000 students, and offers 478 courses across the undergraduate, graduate and certification levels of higher education.
