What is a Cybersecurity Course? We know that many attackers online are trying to steal sensitive business information by sending potentially harmful viruses and other threats to your computer or mobile phones by means of either emails or downloadable media files, links and more. To protect businesses, systems and other useful information from such attacks, strong cybersecurity is required. A cybersecurity course

Cybersecurity Courses

Most cyber-attacks are usually done to access, steal, change or destroy sensitive information that is also confidential and/or get into an organisation’s systems, networks and programs. These attacks are aimed at extorting money or harming the reputation and/or digital information of large businesses. Knowledge of identifying the potential cybersecurity threats and ways to avoid them can be helpful for people, governments and businesses in the long run. Cybersecurity courses help to identify several such conventional and contemporary threats that we may come across in our day-to-day lives and the ways to avoid them.

Taking the cybersecurity course abroad can be beneficial for students in various ways. One such benefit is the introduction to and hands-on practice with the latest technologies. In this article, we will discuss the cybersecurity courses abroad, their syllabus, core topics, top universities, fees and popular online cybersecurity courses that are also free.

What is a Cyber Security Course?

A cyber attacker, with negative intentions, can get inside your system remotely from any part of the world. There are several cases recorded in the history of the world where cyber attackers have gauged into the top confidential information and networks of organisations and damaged their reputation and business to a lethal extent. Some of the greatest cybersecurity attacks and their impacts recorded in the history of the world are briefly discussed below.

    1. The WannaCry Ransomware Attack 2017: It was a worldwide cyberattack that targeted computer systems with the operating system (OS) of Microsoft Windows. The attack came in May 2017 and worked on a vulnerability of Microsoft Windows, which gave attackers the chance to encrypt data on over 200,000 computers across 150 countries and eventually demand ransom payments for the Bitcoin cryptocurrency. The four most affected countries were Russia, India, Taiwan and Ukraine. Alongside this, several medical institutions, such as the National Health Service hospitals, were highly affected by this attack.
    2. Yahoo Hacks (2013 & 2014): The Yahoo data hack that occurred in August 2013 affected all 3 billion account users and owners on the website. The next Yahoo hack in 2014 affected over 500 Yahoo accounts. Both these hacks remained undiscovered until 2016, and combinedly, the impact of both the hacks is considered to be the largest ever in the history of cyber attacks. These attacks compromised user details such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, passwords, and even birthdates. This data breach eroded user trust, resulted in hefty fines for Yahoo, and exposed users to potential identity theft and fraud.
    3. Sony PlayStation Cyber Attack (2011): Also referred to as the PSN Attack, the Sony Playstation Network Attack resulted from the external intrusion on Sony’s network of PlayStation that put details of nearly 77 million accounts at stake and disabled select users of the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Sony Playstation Portable Consoles from accessing the services. The hack resulted in the largest PS outage ever, which lasted for 23 days.

In light of such incidents, the study of cybersecurity courses can be really helpful in protecting global network systems. The cybersecurity courses teach the fundamentals of computer and network systems, the security firewalls, and possible ways to create, detect, modify and destroy several information technology security threats.

The USA is at the centre of everything related to jobs, economies and even education. The USA is a hub for some of the top universities in the world, like MIT, Stanford University, Carnegie Mellon University and UC Berkeley. The country also boasts a strong and vast job market for cybersecurity graduates, such as the NSA, Google, Amazon, and private defence contractors. The only major challenge posed in front of Indian students is the country's high cost of living, visa complexity and really competitive admission processes with the top universities having very low acceptance rates. One has to have a very good student profile and academic qualifications to stand a chance of getting selected at any of those top universities.

2. UK

The UK offers strong academics and government-backed programs when it comes to cybersecurity courses. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) certifies various cybersecurity master's degree programs. Some notable NCSC-certified programs include MSc in Information Security by the University College London, MSc in Cybersecurity by the University of Edinburgh and the University of Birmingham, MSc in Information Security by the University of Surrey and MSc in Cybersecurity and Digital Forensics by Cardiff University.

3. Canada

Canada is famous for providing quality education, but at a lower cost than in the USA and the UK. The country boasts a growing cybersecurity industry. Indian students going to Canada for their studies may need to develop a strong adaptability to the extremely cold climatic conditions and buckle up for the competitive job market. Some of the most notable cybersecurity courses at the top Canadian institutions are Master's in Information Systems Security at Concordia University, network security, software security, and cryptanalysis courses at the University of New Brunswick

4. Germany

Mostly known for its free and quality education, Germany has a strong job market for Indian students who develop a strong understanding of the German language (check how you can learn German language). Germany is renowned for its computer science and engineering fields, and also provides a strong job market for EU and international students (including Indians).

5. Netherlands

The Netherlands provides the benefit of language over Germany, as over 90% of its population is able to converse in the English language. The Netherlands is a startup and tech innovation hub and has progressive visa and work policies for Indian students. The country is home to top universities like Delft University of Technology and the University of Twente

Here's why you should choose the above-given best countries to get a course in cybersecurity abroad -
