What’s the Chevening Scholarship Interview Like?

We will understand this in bits and pieces in the mode of different questions as given below.

1. Format of Chevening Scholarship Interview

The Chevening Scholarship Interview is a competency-based panel assessment conducted in English. The panel includes representatives from the British Embassy or High Commission in your country - who evaluate your answers against the global Chevening Scholarship selection criteria.

All the interviews are typically conducted between March and May - either in person at the British Embassy or High Commission or virtually. Interview slots are available on a first-come, first-served basis - so you should book your slot as soon as you receive your invitation.

2. What happens in the Chevening Scholarship Interview?

As per the official guidance from Chevening, an interview is just meant for discussing the data that you have submitted in your application form such as -

  • Your personal and professional aspirations

  • How a Chevening Scholarship will help you achieve your goals for impact

  • Your three chosen UK university courses and the status of your university applications

Your performance will be rated according to the Chevening standard across the world. Please remember there is no right or wrong answer for any question. The selection committee wants genuine and personalised responses from your side.

What Type of Questions are Asked in the Chevening Scholarship Interview?

All the questions asked in Chevening Scholarship Interview are based on the four key competencies that the Chevening programme in UK is looking for. These 4 key areas of competition and what type of questions each of these may include are reflected here below -

1. Leadership

The Interview Panel wants to explore your ability to lead, inspire others and drive change in the real world. The panel wants to see evidence and not just claims of your leadership journey. Answer with certain examples - with proven work records - if any.

2. Networking

Networking plays an important part in Chevening Scholarship Selection and Interviews. As such, you will be expected to have evidence of how networking has played an important role in your success.

3. Career Plan

With questions in this category, the interviewing committee wants to understand where you are going, why the UK master's degree is the next right step for you and how you intend to use your experience to benefit your home country after returning.

4. Course Choice

You will be asked about your three chosen programmes. The panel wants to see that you have researched each course thoroughly and are able to justify their suitability for your career flow.

Chevening Scholarship Interview Tips

Here are the Chevening Scholarship interview preparation tips-

  1. Be authentic - There's no "right" answer. The panel wants your real story, not a rehearsed script.

  2. Use the STAR method - Structure your examples as Situation → Task → Action → Result. Focus on what you did, not the team.

  3. Set realistic goals - Dream big, but have a credible, SMART pathway to get there.

  4. Research your courses deeply - Know your modules, why you chose each programme, and how they connect to your career goals.

  5. Start early & do a mock interview - Don't prepare the night before. Practice with a mentor or Chevening alumnus.

What happens after the Chevening Interview?

Once your interview is complete, all scholarship candidates are notified of their results from early June onwards. Results are released gradually - so receiving your notification sooner or later than others does not reflect the status of your application.

If your interview is successful, you will be asked to submit an unconditional offer from a UK university. The deadline for 2026-27 applicants to submit at least one unconditional offer is 9 July 2026.

The Chevening interview rewards candidates who are honest, well-prepared and able to articulate a clear vision for their future impact. This was all about the Chevening Scholarship Interview. In case of more doubts, drop your queries in comments below.
