Bachelor of Science in Computing Science- Software Practice Option - Batch of 2025

There are few local job opportunities and students needs to relocate after graduation.
Tips: UAlberta has excellent academic, research and work opportunities, and the campus and student life are pretty vibrant too. Diversity is pretty good, with people from all over the world. Moving to Canada was a big transition, but the UAlberta community made it easier. Overall, I loved my experience here.
Likes (Student Life): The University of Alberta has great spots on campus to study, like SUB, HUB, and a lot of libraries, all of which are very safe. There are also a lot of food options available in these places. There are a lot of club options—Indians Students Association, CS clubs, and many others—to keep students engaged.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Edmonton doesn't have a very large tech sector compared to cities like Toronto or Vancouver. This means fewer local job opportunities, and students often need to relocate after graduation for better job prospects. At least in tech fields like core engineering, there are opportunities right here.

My experiences in the University of Alberta was good.
Tips: The university is in Edmonton. Weather goes to -30 degrees in winter. Cannabis is legal here, so you will see many addicts on the street. Many homeless people near the downtown area. So avoid downtown. I am not that satisfied with my degree. I wanted to switch from software development to machine learning developed with this degree but I don't think I can do it.
Likes (Public transportation): Rate 5 due to robust public transportation. Campus seamlessly connected to the city via buses and Metro. The whole city is well connected. Transportation cost is included in the tuition fees. No need to pay extra for transportation. Uber is easily available if you want to go to a remote destination.
Dislikes (Post study jobs): Rated 3 on post-study jobs due to limited visa sponsorship. Unsure about specific companies. Generally, job roles vary, but the average salary in Edmonton post-studies is around 50k. I got a job through my professor, got lucky with this one. But do not expect the same thing to happen with every student.

Enriching journey at University of Alberta.
Tips: Arriving here marked the beginning of an intriguing chapter. The cultural shift tough at times perplexing unfolded into a tapestry of new perspectives and experiences. Graced by a scholarship to academic achievements, it is not just a financial aid but a recognition that fuels my academic journey. My contentment with the university, the enriching course and the country is akin to finding harmony in this vibrant symphony of education and cultural exploration.
Likes (Permanent Immigration): The chances of PR in Canada seem promising and I genuinely aspire to make it my permanent home. I appreciate the country's different cultures opportunities and quality of life, making it an ideal place for long-term settlement. The desire for PR with my positive experiences and aspirations for the future in this welcoming and vibrant nation.
Dislikes (Public transportation): The city from the campus is easy as there are frequent bus services. The bus stops are conveniently located, making it hassle-free for students to access public transportation. Buses are a popular mode of travel and are known for being affordable, which is great for us on a low budget. The simple city of the bus system in Canada widespread availability makes it a convenient option for exploring the city and commuting to various places.

My journey here was amazing and exposure at University of Alberta is great.
Tips: Definitely there is a cultural shift. It is more about individuals here. Moreover, received a fund of around 21000 CAD/year, which covers my course fees, accommodation, and my living accommodation. This fund is part of my scholarship where the course fee is around 11k/year. CAD and for me the accommodation cost is around 580 CAD. I was very much satisfied with my university. One thing more is that I also received a one-time scholarship of 5000 CAD at the beginning of my programme.

Tips: Canada is foreigner country. So obviously there are many culture difference. But I love the culture here. I applied for scholarship before the starting of the college and they approved my scholarship. I get $10000 scholarship. All the process details available on the university website. I am satisfied with the University of Alberta and Canada.
Likes (Safety): Safety is the first priority of University of Alberta for students. Campus security team available 24/7 to maintain safe and secure campus environment. University of Alberta provide safety and security programme. Security patrol the campus and respond in emergency.
Dislikes (Indian Food): There are many food option available in Edmonton but the thing is foods are very expensive. Our area have different types of foods like Italian, Chinese, Indian, Mexican etc. If you are international student and doing part time job then the food is expensive for you. I prefer eating from home and cooking by myself, because it is very cheap.

Life changing college for me.
Tips: I am very shy type boy but after coming to Canada I completely changed and my network is big in Canada. When you leave your home country no one can be with you so you are solely facing all the problems and it is life changing for me. This country culture is different. I am not eligible for applying scholarship because my IELTS band is low. But I enjoyed to live in this country.
Likes (Public transportation): Public transportation is best in university of alberta. Because they gives university of alberta student U-pass and who have U-pass they can unlimited access to light rail and tansit buses. It is more affordable compare to buy daily ticket. So most of the student have U-pass. And it's affordable.
Dislikes (Indian Food): Because our area lack of availability of Indian food. In our local area Indian foods are hard to find. Most of the hotel and restaurants are non-vegetarian. But all the foods are available in Edmonton. And eating outside is very costly for international students. So I prefer to cook by myself at home.

University of Alberta offers fantastic teaching quality.
Tips: I didn't experience any cultural shift after coming to Canada because in this country Indian population is good. So it will be easy to cope with them. However, there was some cultural differences in terms of cooking and part time work experience. I didn't apply for any internship cause my rank was too low. University of Alberta is one of the best universities for me and I love Canada.
Likes (Indian Food): All the types of restaurants are available for you, if you want to eat non-veg or veg. Mostly non-veg restaurants are here. If you don't know cooking you can eat tiffin. Indian foods are also available in the area. But if you eat outside in restaurants or hotels it will be expensive. You can cook for yourself at home and it will be cheap. So I prefer cooking and before moving to Canada please learn cooking.
Dislikes (Internships): University of Alberta faculty members are helpful in finding internships and applying. Faculty have good knowledge about field-related internships so if you have any doubts related to the internship you can contact them and they will resolve your problem. If you want to do field related internship you can meet the faculty.

Likes (Part time work): On campus job vacancy is too low and chamces to get on campus part time job is also low because all the students first try is get part time job on campus. Off campus job is quite difficult to get but you apply all places and definitely you got a once place. Part time job is manageable because you have 20 hours to do job and all time you are free then you can study free time so part time job alnog with academics is manageable for me.
Dislikes (Student Life): I spend my time in campus to do many activities and some events. I enjoy in campus because campus environment is totally different and I loved my spent more and more time in campus. Many events organized by university are orientation week, guest lectures and speaker series, arts and culture events, sports and atheletics events and many more. Tips: This is one of the best college but there is only one problem which is related to Indian food. Learning the ropes in Waterloo.
Tips: I have been exposed to one of the most multi cultural campuses there are, and this has helped me in building connections with people from all over the world. The networking potential is great, and if you acquaint yourself with your professors, they can be quite valuable for LORs and even referrals. There are plenty of Indians and Indian food options as well, and Canada has a welcoming culture, which is seen in the university.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): There were better chances of getting work here a few years ago, but now Canada has increased its restrictions on immigration and jobs for international students. Tips: I haven't had too many culture changes as I have met people from my city here, which is also an indicator of how global the University of Waterloo truly is. The classes are quite academic, and it's hard to catch up on UPAT times. Also, the transport system can be a bit annoying. Rest, it's a lovely place to learn.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Well, Canada has become increasingly strict with immigration and giving jobs. You'll have better luck with part-time jobs than with finding a full-time opportunity willing to take you in. Be prepared for lots of applications and rejections in the process.

Prerequisites to adapt well and basic requirements.
Tips: Be very active in terms of studying, and be on top of your courses and assignments. You will feel the cultural difference, so be prepared to need some time to adjust to your life here. It is a great university with lots of courses offered. Plan your term courses selection way ahead keeping your work permit and specialisation requirements in mind so as to select the needed course in the term offered and plan it according to courses offered based on which term the professor is available. All this information is available on the University Website. The healthcare infrastructure here is not very good, carry your basic needed medicine along with a doctor's prescription from India. It is a cold country, so be well prepared in terms of warm clothes and gear. Also, bring basic utensils if you are planning to cook your meals, you might not immediately find the kind of utensils you use back home here. Also if wanting to stay off campus, start looking for accommodation well in advance through the Facebook marketplace or other WhatsApp groups present. Living within a 1.5 km of radius University will be a better choice in terms of time spent and winters.
Likes (Post study jobs): We don't need a sponsorship visa to work. Can apply for a Post Graduate Work permit, which has a set of guidelines on the duration of the course, field of study and an English Proficiency IELTS exam which makes you eligible to apply. Stay updated with the guidelines from the government regarding this. You can apply for Post graduate work permit once you are just 2 - 3 months away from graduation. Apply well in advance, once you are eligible as it takes time to get approved.
Dislikes (Part time work): Too many students but too few vacant jobs available. Sometimes job might not hire you as other experienced people are already working. However, start looking for it well in advance. It is unannounced on the University Website when they are hiring for what and which positions. Keep an open eye on it.

University of Waterloo is great for STEM and the industry.
Tips: University of Waterloo with its coop programme is a very STEM and industry-oriented university. Many students through their coops will get work experience and skills that they then use to get full-time jobs and a lot do internships also offer students full-time offers if they do well. Overall the courses offered are useful and helpful, but the best part about the university is the coop programme.
Likes (Public transportation): So with your student card, you can use all the public transport in Waterloo for free. There is a bus system that connects very well all across the city to the university and is especially useful in the winter when it's hard to walk outside. There are also tunnels and indoor bridges that connect different campus buildings so it's easier to travel in the winter and there is also a tram that runs between big hubs.
Dislikes (Student Life): I put a 3 on student life because the University of Waterloo is very study-oriented. There is often a lot of work pressure and multiple things at once for students, so we don't get the chance to enjoy other aspects of university life, like events and going out.

The university provides a strong community spirit.
Tips: If you are creative and keen on embarking on research, this is a good place to consider. I do feel that it is extremely expensive and although placements were usually pretty good, it's no longer the same because of how strict the policies have become and how difficult it is to immigrate anywhere.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Getting any kind of long-term employment opportunity especially as an Indian is going to be a very tricky and unlikely task. They have become extremely particular and your chances of moving here to immigrate are slim to none. It is better to plan an alternative instead.

Great experience, the curriculum is good and the faculty is really helpful.
Tips: The University of Waterloo has got to be one of the best experiences I've had so far. You are certain to find people you gel with but it is important to remember that academically, courses are quite hard to keep up with. Also before you commit, you must remember that Canada has become very firm with immigration. The public transportation is flexible and affordable so you can explore the city. Overall, I am satisfied with my experience.

Got to explore my potential and grow as a person.
Tips: Students should know that the people are polite and welcoming so you don't need to worry about feeling too out of place. You will be expected to prepare well for your classes to keep up with your coursework. Finding jobs is a big challenge and I feel it has become extremely expensive to survive here so if you can avoid Canada then you should consider that option.
Dislikes (Internships): You are going to have a hard time finding internships here since the college doesn't actively provide internships for students, you are left to your own devices which becomes even harder as we are international students and our options become limited.

Statistics - MMath - Batch of 2024

University of Waterloo taught me hard work and resilience.
Tips: It is a warm and welcoming campus at least in my case. I chose this university because of its reputation but now I feel that it is a better idea to study outside Canada itself. Quality of learning is great and you will be expected to work very hard from the first week itself. The faculty will help you in every step towards your journey.
Dislikes (Permanent Immigration): Canada has become increasingly strict when it comes to immigration and allowing foreigners especially Indians to settled in which is why there are very little chances to get a well paid job here at least right now. I am pretty grateful to be here as well.

Good experience with promising results.
Tips: University of Waterloo is known for its research and famous alumni which is a plus point if you are interested in academia. I would suggest that you reside on or near campus else the commute can take forever. Moreover, you can expect a lot of competitiveness even though the campus is very friendly and welcoming overall.

Tips: If you're someone who is innovative and curious, the University of Waterloo will allow you to have room for further developing your potential such as through their programme called Velocity where the primary purpose was of building start-ups and entrepreneurship. The student life here is great and you will be provided with many opportunities.
