The IELTS Listening section has four recordings with many unknown words on different subjects. A list of common words help you understand how speakers talk and what they mean. Knowing these words also make it easier to spot paraphrases and synonyms, two tricks to get more correct answers and avoid confusion.

To help you feel more confident and not get stuck with hard vocabulary, this article show some of the most repeated words in IELTS Listening test. These words appear in many parts of test and are very important to understand audio correctly.

Q. How many questions in total are there in the IELTS Listening test?

A. There are 40 questions in total in the IELTS Listening section. These questions are equally distributed over the 4 parts of the IELTS Listening Test. 

Q. What is the total time allowed to attempt the IELTS Listening Test?

A. The total allowed time to attempt the IELTS Listening section is 30 minutes. However, an extra 10 minutes are also provided to transfer your answer to the answer sheet. 

Q. What IELTS Listening band score will I receive on giving 22 correct answers?

A. IELTS Listening section consists of 40 questions - each of which carries 1 mark. On getting 22 answers correct - one would receive a score of 22/40 on the IELTS Listening test. 

IELTS Listening band score corresponding to 22 marks is 5.5. Hence you may expect to receive a band score of 5.5 on IELTS Listening upon giving 22 correct answers.

Ans. The audio recordings are not repeated during the IELTS Listening test. During the exam, each audio will only be played once, so paying attention throughout is very important.

Q. What are the common mistakes in the IELTS listening score?

Ans. 
  • Misunderstanding information: similar-sounding words or phrases can lead to incorrect answers. So, practice with a variety of audio while preparing.
  • Not paying attention to instructions: failing to follow specific instructions in question types like completion questions can result in incorrect answers. For instance, if the instruction says “no more than one word” writing two words would be marked wrong. Prioritise reading and adhering to the instructions to prevent silly mistakes.
  • Incorrect spelling & grammatical mistakes: Inaccuarcy in spelling or grammar will cost you points, even if your response makes sense holistically. For instance, putting “beleive” in place of “believe”. Al ways check your spelling while transferring your answers.
