Many students ask, “What score I need to pass IELTS?” Actually there is no pass or fail. IELTS gives band score 1 to 9. The cut-off depends on your goal. Each university or country has own IELTS band requirement. Some need 6.0 or 6.5. MIT or Oxford want 7.0 or 7.5. Unlike your school exams, you cannot "fail" the IELTS. You just get a score between Band 1 (lowest) and Band 9 (highest). But, even if there is no fail, you still need a minimum score to get your visa or university admission. This minimum score is called the IELTS Cutoff.

So, What is a Good IELTS Score?

It depends on why you are taking the test.

  • For Study (Student Visa): Most universities in Canada, UK, and USA ask for Band 6.0 to 6.5 overall. If you get less than 6.0, it is very hard to get admission in good college.

  • For Top Universities: If you want to go to big university like Oxford or Harvard, the cutoff is very high, usually Band 7.0 or 7.5.

So, before you book your exam, you must check the requirement of your university or visa office. If they say "Minimum 6.5", then for you, 6.5 is the passing mark.

What is the Passing Score in IELTS?

There is no pass or fail in IELTS exam. You get band score 1 to 9 for every part – Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking. Then the four scores get average for overall IELTS band score.

The score you need depend on your goal like study, work or immigration. Different schools, countries, or visa rules have own minimum score, also called IELTS cut-off. Some colleges take 5.5 or 6.0, most want 6.5 or more, top schools like Harvard or Oxford need 7.0 or 7.5.

Commonly asked questions
Q:   Is getting 7 in IELTS hard?
A:

Getting 7 band in IELTS is good in English. It can be hard if you don’t know the test or practice. But if you study daily, practice all sections. Based on this many students can get 7 score and go study abroad or do jobs.

Q:   Can I still get admission if I don't meet the IELTS cut off?
A:

Some universities give conditional admission if your IELTS score is less than required. They may ask you to do an English course first before starting your main program. This helps you improve English and be ready for studies at the university.

Q:   Is 6.5 a good score in IELTS?
A:

It proves your English is proficient, with some issues. Score is enough to get admission into universities worldwide for both UG and PG degrees. Also, you can apply for a visa.

What is the Minimum IELTS Score to Study Abroad?

The minimum IELTS score required to study abroad varies depending on the country, the university ranking, and the level of your degree (UG vs. Postgraduate).

While there is no "fail" in IELTS, every university and visa office has a specific "cut-off." If you do not meet this cut-off, your application will likely be rejected. Each country and college has its own IELTS cut-off. One can check the degree wise general IELTS cutoff.
