OET Single Sub-Test Retake: Rules and Fees (2026)

If you miss the required score in one section (e.g., Writing) but pass the others, you may not need to retake the entire exam immediately. You do not need to do OET registration again for this. This is called Clubbing or Combining scores. Regulatory bodies like the UK (NMC) and Australia (NMBA) have strict rules for this.

1. Clubbing Rules for UK Nurses (NMC)

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) allows you to combine scores from two sittings if you meet ALL these conditions:

  • Time Limit: Both tests must be taken within 6 months of each other.
  • Minimum Score: You must not score below Grade C+ (300) in any section in either of the two sittings.
  • Completion: You must have sat for all 4 sub-tests in both attempts (you cannot just take the "Writing" section alone).

2. Clubbing Rules for Australia (NMBA)

The rules for Australia are very similar to the UK but with a strict focus on the "6-month window."

Condition Requirement
Attempts Scores must be from two test sittings only.
Time Gap The two sittings must be within 6 months.
Minimum Score No score in any sub-test should be below 300 (C+).
Goal Combined, you must meet the 350 (B) requirement in all 4 sections.

Pro Tip: Always check the latest update on the official NMC or NMBA website before booking your retake. Rules can change without notice.

What is a Good OET Score?

Verify the facts. You must always check with your specific medical council or registration board to ensure your OET score meets the current demand of the market. Stay updated.
