In place of GTE (Genuine Temporary Entrant), a new requirement called the Genuine Student (GS) requirement came into force for 2024 admissions. What is a Genuine Student Requirement?

The Genuine Student (GS) requirement is a comprehensive assessment of Australian student visa applications - Subclass 500 visa. This new requirement has been introduced to include those students who wish to study and stay in Australia for work and further apply for a PR in Australia. The GS assesses students based on different parameters like - their ties with family, financial circumstances, employment details, reasons to study in Australia and other related information important for sharing.

Applicants must justify if they choose not to pursue similar educational opportunities in their home country. They should elaborate on their personal circumstances, such as familial bonds, community connections, and employment prospects, which may influence their decision to study abroad rather than locally.

Economic Circumstances in Home Country or Country of Residence for GS

To prove economic conditions, the applicants will have to submit the following documents:

• Documents of employment or business activities for 12 months before applying.
• Potential employment offers with salary and benefits, after course completion.
• Financial documents like Income tax returns or bank statements.

2. Explain why you want to study this course in Australia with this university: Here, you’ll have to explain your understanding of the requirements of the intended course and details about studying and living in Australia.

4. If there are any other important details you would like to include, then you can include in the section.

Genuine Student Assessment Criteria

The GS assessment criterion assesses students’ intention and genuity to study in Australia. It considers factors including the applicant’s - circumstances, immigration history and compliance with visa conditions.

1. Situations Home country (or country of residence)

Based on the situation of the applicant’s home country, GS assesses:

• Understanding of the applicant’s ties to their home country.
• The economic circumstances of the applicants also play a crucial role in meeting the GS requirements.
• Also, GS will assess the applicant’s home country’s military service commitments and political or civil unrest in the present case scenario.

2. Potential Situation in Australia

To understand if the applicant can be a potential candidate for studying in Australia, the following requirements for GS must be elaborated upon:

• The level of knowledge for the chosen course and about the education provider in Australia. 
• Previous study and qualifications

4. Immigration ​History

To study in Australia, visa officers always ensure the immigration history of the applicants. Here’s what all will be assessed in GS requirement: 

• The applicant’s visa and travel history for Australia and/or other countries.
• If there were any previous visa applications for Australia (or other countries).
• Any visa refusals or cancellations in the past.

If the applicant is a minor, i.e., 18 years or younger, visa officers will consider the intentions of the parent, legal guardian, or spouse to sponsor the visa in Australia.

• Suppose other aspects, such as a student’s study history and family ties, are well established. In that case, weaknesses in one area (such as financial evidence) do not significantly delay the application processing time for Australia student visa.

• Providing a straightforward explanation backed by credible evidence enables the officer to determine the applicant’s intentions and process the application without significant delays.
