Understanding Healthcare Systems

It is important to understand the healthcare system of the host country. Indian students must familiarize themselves with the local healthcare providers' emergency services and insurance coverage available to them. It is important that the students must have all the knowledge on how to access medical care in case of sudden illness or injury and they must have insurance coverage to avoid unexpected expenses.

Maintain health lifestyle

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key to overall well-being be it in foreign countries or your home country also. The rules of the game are the same - one needs to exercise daily, eat a balanced diet regularly and get adequate sleep to support overall well-being. Drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated and get sunlight for a daily dose of Vitamin D. Also it is important to get regular checkups.

Be emotionally healthy

It is equally important to be emotionally healthy by talking to fellow Indians, keeping in touch with your family and friends and trying to enjoy and explore the culture of your host country.

Adjusting to a new country sometimes results in feelings of homesickness, stress and anxiety as the student navigates academic challenges, cultural differences and social pressures. Regularly talk to family on video calls, and attend your family functions virtually. Universities also offer support groups, counselling services and mental health resources, avail them. Also, practice relaxation exercises, and mindfulness. One can also do some kind of meditation.

Cultural adaptation

In a foreign country, one is going to encounter unfamiliar food choices, dietary habits, and healthcare norms. One must adjust to these changes while maintaining cultural practices that promote well-being. Discuss with fellow students so that you know what healthy local diets you can add to your food.

Also, maintain a support network of fellow Indian students. Connect with students, faculty members, and community organizations to build social connections which will help you immensely and will make you more comfortable in your host country.
