Is There a Live UK Visa Tracker?

No, not exactly. UKVI does not offer a real-time online tracker the way some countries do. Instead you get milestone updates at key stages rather than a continuous live view of your case. For most Indian applicants, VFS Global is the primary channel for these tracking updates - since VFS is UKVI's official commercial partner in India for appointments, biometrics and document handling.

What You Need to Track Your UK Visa Application?

The only way to track the status of your UK visa application is online and not by visiting or calling a visa centre in person, as they do not provide live status updates at the counter. You would need certain documents or information ready with you to track your UK student visa application online. These are -

  1. The GWF Number

  2. The UAN Number

  3. Your Passport details

Let us learn more about each of these documents and how these are helpful in checking your UK student visa application status. Meanwhile, you can also check - "How to avoid student visa delays?".

1. The GWF Number

The full form of GWF is Global Web Form. The GWF number is a unique 9-digit number that is generated a unique 9-digit identifier generated when you start or submit a UK visa application. It is represented as - GWF0XXXXXXXX. The GWF number can be found in the email that you receive from UKVI upon successfully submitting your UK visa application. It can also be found in the PDF of your application form or on the appointment confirmation document generated by visa partners like VFS Global or TLScontact.

The GWF Number is your primary tracking key to monitor your student visa application status, link your biometrics and make official inquiries.

2. UAN Number

A UAN is your Unique Application Number. It is a 16-digit reference number assigned by the UK Home Office. The general format of a UAN Number is - XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. The UAN Number is also important for tracking your UK student visa status, making inquiries with the UKVI and accessing your digital immigration status (eVisa) once approved.

Indian students often find it confusing to choose between a GWF Number and the UAN Number to track their visa applications. But it is important to note that - the UAN Number is the primary identifier that the UK’s Home Office uses to directly link and update your specific case file in their system.

The UAN Number is also important for logging into a third-party’s tracking system (like that of VFS and TLScontact) in order to retrieve the information on your application status.

3. Passport Details

Your passport details, especially the passport number, are used to link your UKVI Account and your CAS Letter. Make sure all the details that you entered in your university application form and UK visa application form match the details on your passport, most importantly your name.

How to Track UK Student Visa Application?

Before checking the process to check your UK visa status online, it’s important that you know that VFS notifies you whenever a decision on your application is reached back at the centre - after processing through UKVI.

1. VFS Global Portal: Log in with your GWF number to see administrative movement - receipt, transfer to UKVI and return of your file after a decision. These updates confirm movement of your application rather than substantive review progress.

2. Your UKVI Online Account: Once a decision is made, you can view and prove your immigration status through your UKVI online account - which is directly tied to your passport.

3. Email Notifications: UKVI communicates decisions primarily by email - so check your inbox and spam folder regularly once your status shows movement.

4. Phone or Paid Enquiry: If your application is significantly delayed - you can contact UKVI directly. A paid email enquiry service costs around £2.74 per query and typically gets a reply within two working days.

Understanding the eVisa System (2026 Update)

Physical Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) have been fully phased out and expired in the UK. Instead in February 2026, UKVI launched its eVisa system in India - replacing the old visa sticker previously placed in passports. This means your visa status now lives entirely online and you'll generate a secure share code when you need to prove your status - for renting, working or travelling.

Standard Processing Time of a UK Student Visa

Standard student visa processing generally takes about 3 weeks from your biometric appointment date, though many straightforward student cases are decided within 1–2 weeks of biometrics. Keep in mind: LeapScholarLawSentis

  1. Priority processing costs around £500 and delivers a decision within 5 working days.

  2. Super-priority service, costing £1000, aims for a decision by the next working day, for a higher fee.

  3. June to September is peak season, and processing can stretch to 5–6 weeks even for a clean application.

Understanding the Administrative Jargons Used to Describe Your UK Visa Application Status

The UK administration uses words and jargon that may not be understood by Indian students properly at first attempt. So, once a student gets a generic email notification, they instantly turn to Google to translate what their updated application status actually means. Below we have listed some of such jargon used to describe your application status by the authorities along with what they could actually mean -

  1. Jargon used - “Processed UK visa application forwarded to UKVI”,

    • Meaning - The local VFS Global centre (e.g., in Delhi, Mumbai, or Chennai) has completed your biometric scan and uploaded your documents. They have officially transmitted your entire digital file to the UK government decision-makers.

  2. Application Status - “Received by UKVI”.

    • This means - the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has officially logged your file into their system and it is in the queue for review. A visa officer is now analysing your bank statements, academic history, and university details.

      1. Note: Keep a close eye on your phone and inbox. If they need extra clarity on your Indian bank funds, they will contact you during this phase.

  3. Application Status - “A Decision Has Been Made"

    • This simply means - a visa officer has officially approved or refused your visa. The final verdict is locked in and it is a secret for now. You will find out the real result only when you open your physical passport or receive the official "UKVI Decision Letter" email.

  4. Application Status - "Passport Dispatched / Ready for Collection"

    • This means - your physical passport has been sealed inside a secure envelope. It is either sitting at your designated VFS centre for counter collection or has been handed over to a domestic courier partner (like Blue Dart) to travel to your home address.

  5. Application status - "Application Placed On Hold / Not Straightforward"

    • This means that your file needs extra time and verification. This usually happens during peak season (July-September) if a UK visa officer faces a delay verifying your financial documents with an Indian bank, or if they decide you need a quick credibility interview. In this case, keep checking your emails and respond immediately to any emails asking for extra documents.
