Choosing the Right Recommender

For a better grasp of how a recommendation letter can be made effective, it also requires understanding who the recommender should be. Selecting a recommender appropriately is very important, which depends upon your link with the recommender. Your recommender should know you well enough to introduce and substantiate your application in the most effective way. He should be able to substantiate his statements with proper instances and anecdotes in the LOR. The recommender should be able to understand the specific qualities of the application, work done in a specific project, and instances that can be quoted in the LOR. It is also essential to quote not only the instances but also the manner of presentation that can be of added value to the LOR.

This will mean that you will need to request a set of differing anecdotes based on your educational, working experience, and skills. Thus, you will need two Letters of Recommendation, which will need to be written on your behalf by people who will be able to offer the same insight from the two differing experiences that you have been able to have with them.

LOR for MS Courses

In the event of an LOR for an MS course, if you have already given two Academic LORs, then you will need to aim for recommenders who can speak about two different experiences/skill sets. For example, one of your profs might speak about your learning experiences at your internship, and another might speak about your seminar/workshop. For instance, if you have one recommender, you should write for the purpose of endorsing you, "ABC's technical skills along with his management skills were showcased in one of his projects with the title ‘Enhancing Efficiency of Screw Press Oil Expeller Roller’, in which he demonstrated his skills on problem solving, innovation, design, and manufacture, and so on." Consequently, it will become a need to emphasize other side achievements via other recommenders.

LOR for MBA courses

Moreover, even while preparing your professional LORs for MBA courses, you must brief your recommenders about this. For example, if the recommender says something like “I remember when we were discussing some technical options and upgrades to the basic design of our product, ABC voraciously read various online journals, company operations profiles, and user-interaction details. This helped us to choose the best architecture option for the availability and performance of the application focused on the target customer needs. We saved a lot of time and effort by choosing the right path early and ABC played the key role in making this happen”. The other recommender, even if he/she belongs to the same organization, must make it a point not to include this example. Also, until and unless specified, the format for MBA LOR would only vary in content from that of an MS LOR.

How to Write LOR Application?

Having understood the importance of an LOR, now let us learn how to make a recommendation letter from scratch. The first consideration that you should be making is to choose which academic qualities, instances or achievements you should mention, given the specialisation that you want. For example, when evaluating an MBA letter of recommendation, you must make sure that you come across some attributes like leadership attributes, communication attributes, and experience related to crisis or problem-solving through specific instances or examples as have been observed by the person recommending you. The effect of this is that it creates an impression on the person evaluating you that you already have some attributes necessary for you to perform well at the MBA level.

On the other hand, and answering perhaps your curiosity about how to compose a recommendation letter for a student seeking admission into an MS in Computer Engineering program, it only makes sense that this letter be taken into consideration to incorporate a relevant example related to his attributes of programming, research, innovation, hacking, and so on. In addition, it always proves to be a wise move to indicate the talent of your candidate by their excellent results in relevant subjects, specifically those for which your candidate is applying, as well as other prizes that your candidate has collected in your presence.

Note: Start the LOR with how the applicant is associated with you, for how long you have known them, and what your overall idea about the applicant is.

Format of a Letter of Recommendation

LOR formats usually do not chane. There is a traditional format that is used in majority of the courntries and their universities. A basic LOR should be one page in length and can be divided into five or six paragraphs. The LOR must have the following sections:

  • Date

  • Name of the recipient

  • Recipient title

  • Address of the recipient

  • Greeting

  • Personal introduction: Start the body of

  • Your letter by introducing who you are and

  • What is your relationship with the applicant

  • Recommendation: What makes an

  • Applicant a good fit? You can provide

  • Specific examples of skills or qualifications

  • In different body paragraphs

  • Closing

  • Contact information

  • Signature

How to write a good LOR?

There is a fine line between good LOR and an impressive LOR. Both are equally important for a winning LOR writing. Given below are some of the tips on how to write an LOR. These will help the LOR stand out in front of the admission officers or potential employers, who will review it.

  • The information provided should be relevant and accurate
  • The recommender should have known you for at least six months
  • Do not copy from online samples. The Admissions Committee is very strict when it comes to plagiarism. Take inspiration, but do not copy.
  • The recommender should discuss the positive traits about the candidate
  • The language and composition of the LOR should be lucid and simple · During the final brush-up of your LOR, take a close look at all the grammatical mistakes and rectify them. The importance of grammar in LOR is important.
  • The most important aspect of an impressive LOR is that the sentences are short and on point. Lengthy sentences tend to break the flow of the LOR and fail to convey the crux of what is stated, to the reader
  • The LOR should be crisp; not more than 500-600 words in length, fitting in one page
  • In a professional LOR, ‘discuss’ the role and responsibilities of the individual and highlight the traits displayed. Do not ‘describe’ job responsibilities, or else it would sound more like a CV than an LOR.
  • Provide the accurate contact details of the recommender

Some detailed tips on how to write an LOR:

The recommender writing your LOR can ask the applicants to provide the academic program requirements or job description, their resume, any specific achievements, or qualifications that they want to highlight. By doing this, one can focus on what is actually needed for the skills and qualifications that are specific to the role for which the applicant is applying.

  • A template can be used to write an LOR, but, it should appear formal.
  • Portray strong enthusiasm, and avoid any comments that show the candidate in a negative light.
  • To make the LOR appear stronger use active voice instead of passive voice.
  • This means that the LOR should specify the applicant's eligibility and suitability for the course or program of study. The stress should be more on suitability rather than the recommender sounding like an advocate. For instance, the recommender should specify how you fared in a class, like whether were you in the top 3 or the top 1% in the class/university.
  • A good LOR should not mention any grades or scores of competitive tests unless there is a requirement to interpret some academic details. These are already mentioned in your application, so repeating them again in your LOR is not advisable.
  • Do not mention any sensitive or private information, about the applicant, in the LOR, unless it has any relevance or is considered necessary.

What are the Skills to be Highlighted in the LOR?
