About RMIT University
Founded in 1887, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) is a top public university located in Melbourne Victoria, Australia. It has three campuses, including Melbourne City campus, Bundoora, and Brunswick, along with two regional sites. History
Working Men's College of Melbourne was founded before the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology by the Scottish-born grazier and the Hon Politician. RMIT was first founded by a Melbourne Philanthropist named Francis Ormond in 1882. Established on Jun 4, 1887, the Working Men's College of Melbourne was opened by a gala ceremony at the Melbourne Hall.
Later in 1904, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology was incorporated under the Companies Act as a private college. During 1917-18, the college started establishing classes in trade teaching for servicemen, and in 1934, it was renamed Melbourne Technical College. Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology gained university status in 1992, under state legislation, and then adopted the name RMIT University. In 1992, the university was merged with the Philip Institute of Technology and became a public university by the act of the Victorian Government.
