The new degree program - Financial Technology PhD aims to meet local and global education, innovation, and workforce needs. The Worcester Polytechnic Institute is the only university in the US to offer all degree levels in FinTech.
To meet the emerging industry trends and demands, Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has introduced the nation’s first PhD program in Financial Technology (FinTech).
“Introducing a doctoral degree program in FinTech exemplifies how WPI is a global innovator at the intersection of business and technology. Graduates of this program will emerge as academic and industry leaders who will shape the future of financial technology education and the financial services sector,” said WPI President Grace Wang.
"We are witnessing an unprecedented convergence of academic advancements and industry needs in the FinTech sector. Our PhD program will provide students with the interdisciplinary skills and knowledge necessary to drive innovation and address the complex challenges facing the FinTech industry," said Debora Jackson, Harry G. Stoddard Professor of Management and Dean of The Business School at WPI.
WPI Financial Technology PhD Details
The application submission deadline for the fall semester is May 1 for domestic and international students. Applications submitted after the deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The university does not accept applications for the spring semester.
The program is uniquely positioned to offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary education that bridges finance, mathematics, computer science, and ethics. The students are going to learn a complex blend of skills including analytics, data science, applied statistics, finance and mathematics to AI and blockchain and develop a keen understanding of regulatory and compliance landscapes.

The student will also get a chance to engage in cutting-edge research and practical applications of their studies at WPI’s state-of-the-art FinTech Innovation Hub and through external partnerships. The demand for skilled professionals continues to rise in the industry. The university also offers master’s and bachelor’s degree programs.
GMAT or GRE scores are optional; waivers could be available for WPI alumni who have achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher and may be waived for applications with special circumstances.
FinTech has evolved tremendously in the last decade and the growth gained momentum, particularly during the recent pandemic period when people used online payment services, cryptocurrencies, and mobile banking like never before. FinTech is growing fast and industry forecast predicts 1.5 million new roles and some of the highest salaries in the tech industry. All these new developments created the need for FinTech experts holding a PhD degree in the subject. The PhD holder in Fintech will have the skills to teach financial technology programs and lead the industry.
There is no minimum GPA score for UG admission at Ohio State. However, International students must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale or equivalent) for graduate admission. Applicants may submit a standardized test score (GRE or GMAT) if their cumulative GPA is below 3.0 for the last degree.
According to various sources, University of Texas San Antonio has an overall acceptance rate of around 87% which makes it somewhat selective for international student admissions. Some of the general requirements to be considered for admission are given as follows:

The University of South Dakota expects a GPA score of 2.5 from undergraduates and 3 from postgraduates on the 4-pointer scale. Along with the GPA scores, undergraduates must meet the basic eligibility and submit an ACT score of 21 or higher and an SAT score of 1070 or higher. In addition, they must submit the required documents, such as academic history, transcripts, letters of recommendation, English language scores, and more.
