At the end of May 2025, the US State Department announced an abrupt halt to scheduling new student visa interviews at US consulates for F, M and J visas worldwide. Millions of students applying for the Fall intake are witnessing chaos, with little to no information from official sources, as the interview process resumes. Let's explore how US student visa interview freeze affects Indian applicants, plausible reasons for visa rejections, what to do in such cases, and what Plan B is.

us student visa interview freeze

The freeze remains in place, as of mid-June, for thousands of Indian students, many of whom have admission letters or I-20s in hand, who have paid their SEVIS fee and are experiencing difficulty looking at long-term plans to study in the United States. The timing could not have been more devastating, as this approach falls between May and August, the busiest time of year, when generally 70% of all US student visas are issued within this short time frame.

This time, also known as the Fall intake of USA, has recorded a massive rejection rate and has already witnessed revocation of 309 visa applications for Indian students (the largest international student pool in USA followed by China) and is still counting. On the other hand, Chinese students are equally facing back-to-back visa rejections. But what is the reason, and what is the solution? Let us discuss here in detail.

Why Have the US Student Visa Interviews Frozen?

The official reason for halting F, J and M student visas in USA is a comprehensive revamp of visa screening procedures, which includes intense social media checks and background vetting, aimed at enhancing national security. While the US government insists that this is a temporary measure, no precise end date has been provided, and the impact on Fall 2025 admissions is already significant, with effects felt across the global student community, especially for those applying for an F1 visa in the USA.

Top Reasons Indian Students Face Visa Holds or Rejections

Below is a summary of the main reasons based on official sources as to why US student visa applications might be delayed, put on hold, or denied as of June 2025:

Basis for Hold/Rejection

What It Means for You (Indian Student)

Pause on Scheduling New Student-Visa Interviews

If you did not secure an appointment before the freeze, your application is on hold until consulates reopen for new interviews.

Enhanced Social-Media Screening

All applicants’ public social media will now be checked for “extremism” or “hostility to US policy.” Posts flagged under these areas can lead to student visa denial, even without criminal charges.

Loss of SEVP Certification

If your university loses its SEVP certification, your I-20 will become invalid, even if you have a valid visa. You must transfer to an SEVP-certified institution immediately to be eligible to enter the US.

SEVIS Record Termination

Violating F-1 rules (e.g., dropping below full-time enrollment, unauthorised work, providing false information) can lead to SEVIS cancellation, automatically invalidating your visa.

Criminal/Security Inadmissibility

Any criminal history or suspected links to security risks can result in denial or revocation, even if unproven or discovered at the port of entry.

Failure to Prove Non-Immigrant Intent (214(b))

If you can’t demonstrate strong ties to India (such as family, job prospects, or property), your visa may be refused under 214(b) visa refusals.

Financial-Document Gaps

Unconvincing or incomplete proof of funds for at least 12 months of tuition and living costs, or suspicious transactions, will result in rejection.

Incomplete or Wrong Paperwork

Any error or mismatch with your applications (DS-160, I-20, and passport) will almost always result in automatic refusal.

Poor Interview Performance

Hesitant or inconsistent answers regarding your choice of program, career plans, and funding often result in on-the-spot refusals.

Confusion over Interview Waivers

New rules made waivers available to various student types under Dropbox in USA for some returning students, but first-time F-1/M-1 applicants do not qualify for this waiver. Expecting a waiver when you don’t qualify increases the risk of rejection.

SEVIS Fee or Entry-Date Errors

Paying the SEVIS fee too early or attempting to enter the U.S. too soon before your program start date can result in denial at the border.

These reasons have already been functioning, but social media profiles assessment and US universities losing their SEVP certification have broadened Indian students' misery. As rules become more stringent, it's beneficial for applicants from India to prepare themselves in advance. These are applicable for J1 visas in USA as well, since it is for exchange program students along with F and M visas.

How Has Freezing Student Visa Interviews Impacted Indian Applicants?

Since the widespread crackdown on student visa interviews has been announced, the higher education trajectories of millions of students have come to a halt and are at risk as well. While no sources are confirming the delay and when the processes shall resume, students still have to wait for luck to turn in their favour. Till then, uncertainty and anxiety loom large. Uncertainty & Anxiety Among Applicants

For Indian students, the United States has been one of the popular destinations for study. More than 3.37 lakh students were granted a student visa in 2024, and it was expected that the numbers would increase. However, with the sudden halt of interviews, students are either forced to wait for a decision or explore alternative options. Long represented the gold standard for higher education and career opportunities. Now, the uncertainty is noticeable. Many students who had planned to begin their studies in Fall 2025 are left in a void, unable to secure visa appointments or unsure if their visas will be approved in time.

The US Bureaucratic Network Interventions

Even before the freeze, US student visa rejection rates were increasing due to tighter documentation requirements, increased scrutiny of bank statements, and more intense interviewing. Now, with the extra requirements of social media screening and the possibility of losing their university SEVP certification, it is more daunting than ever. Additionally, even after the interviews resume, the US student visa processing timelines are expected to change, potentially leading to a delayed start to the academic year.

The Effect on Admissions in the Upcoming Years Can Be Less Enthusiastic

The current climate sends a signal not just to students from banned or high-risk countries, such as Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, and Venezuela, but to all international applicants that the US may be less welcoming than before. This increased scrutiny and intense sentiment are already affecting decisions by foreign governments and scholarship agencies, some of which have begun redirecting students to other countries.

What Should Indian Students Do About the Halt in US Student Visa Interviews?

Rather than panicking and searching for info from here and there, Indian applicants must be proactive and stay informed. Only communicate with trusted sources and do the following when in doubt:

  1. Stay current with developments regarding the visa interview freeze and policy changes by monitoring the US Embassy and the Department of State's websites. Only refer to official sources and persons for information.
  2. Most universities in the US will understand the circumstances. They may be able to assist you with the situation, such as extending your enrollment deadline and allowing you to start your studies online. Thus, contacting US universities where you have been admitted is key here.
  3. Use the time to ensure that you have complete, accurate, and organised documentation. Recheck your financial documents, including your SEVIS fee receipt, I-20 form, and DS-160 form details, one last time. Organising paperwork is necessary before attending your student visa interview.
  4. Review your public or social profiles for any content that could be misinterpreted in light of the new screening procedures. Be it related to wars in the past, policies in USA or any hateful comments against US or its government. Since more scrutiny will be underway, it is better to review social media profiles and clean them up if necessary.
  5. Lastly, connect with the international student office at the university (if you are starting school) and consult a reputable education consultant.

What Can be a Potential Plan B for Indian Applicants?

Although this temporary freeze is causing prolonged chaos, it is being presented as a temporary measure. It does not appear that students with approved appointments will have their visas revoked solely because of a freeze. However, as things remain unpredictable, it is smart to consider schools in alternative destinations or to defer your admission for the Spring intake in USA, if possible. Additionally, if applications from other countries are open, applicants should apply.

The US educational market remains in a dilemma, and its Advocacy groups, universities, and business leaders are already vouching for a swift end to the freeze. If you are determined to study in the US, stay prepared, stay informed, and don’t let temporary obstacles derail your long-term goals.

If your American Dream is on hold, you are not alone. Use this time to strengthen your application, maintain open communication with your university, and stay vigilant for updates. Remember, the freeze is a pause, not a complete stop. Your journey may be delayed, but with patience and preparation, your dream can still take flight!
