Virginia Tech History
The Virginia Tech University first opened its doors as the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1872.
Addison Caldwell or Add Caldwell, walked around 26 miles or 41 kilometers, from Craig County to enroll as the first student at the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. In the 1890s, the institute replaced its original colors of black and gray and shifted to burnt orange and maroon.
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets also became official in the 1890s, while 1923 saw, the university welcome its first cohort of women students, also reducing the military training period of cadets from 4 years to 2 years.
The institute has also overseen the development of nine colleges and the Virginia Tech Graduate School, and today, welcomes more than 38,000 students from across the globe.
