University of California Berkeley History
The University of California, Berkeley is a public research university that was founded in 1868 and is based in Berkeley, California. When the university first opened in Oakland in 1869, it had ten faculty members and 40 male students, and then women started joining in the following year. In 1919, the Los Angeles State Normal School became the southern branch of the university which later became the University of California, Los Angeles.
