History
UTAS began with three lecturers teaching 11 students. By the 1st world-war it enrolled around 100 students. Several Tasmania Uni graduates played a key role in the country's law and politics. Sir John Morris took over as Chancellor and remained in that role until 1939. The early 1960s saw UTAS transfer to its new campus at Sandy Bay. In 1981, it incorporated the College of Advanced Education on Mount Nelson, and increased its total enrollment to over 5,000 students. By 2000, the university merged with the Tasmanian State Institute of Technology at Launceston.
